Congrats to the winners. Because of the great effort of everyone involved, there is a runner-up prize of $100 Apple gift certificate for the Mobile Admin folks.
I need each of the entrants to send me their name, team, and full address with [iphone-contest] in the subject. If you're on the WPhone team, let me know if you'd like an iPhone, 16gb iPod touch, or gift certificate. I also have some anonymized comments and constructive criticism from the judges for each team that I can share privately.

Many thanks go out to the forum denizens who provided us with valuable bug reports and screenshots aplenty.
All right, I can finally reply to this (crazy busy at work).
First: woohoo, and yes, please send in the criticism and suggestions: that's what's made the product so cool. We had a good idea, but user feedback is what made it a winner, right from the beginning when people suggested to go on and support all mobile devices.
Second: thanks to everybody involved, and most particularly my teammates and our user base.
Third: now on to releasing 1.4.1 tonight with the last round of updates in the svn dev branch. :)
Fourth: Thank you Matt for the extra attention with the runner up prizes our *opponents*. These guys did a great job too.

Indeed it was — it would be cool to see more motivation incentives like this in the future._______________________________________________ wp-hackers mailing list wp-hack...@lists.automattic.com http://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-hackers
On semi-related note, I guess neither plugin probably will be able to go after the Google/Android $10M prize: they've done all the work for us already... :( / :)

What, creating an app for the proprietary iPhone platform will be better than one that will run on the open Android platform?

And don't forget, the OHA/Android spec calls for OpenGL support (at least on the high-end devices). Think of the niftiness (dare I say "Leopard-ness"?) that clever devs will be able to wrangle the devices into with that sort of hardware backing...!
I must admit, there's a great deal to having an OPEN SDK right now, with known license and usage restrictions, as opposed to having a promised one whose constraints, "code signing", licenses, etc., are not yet even known to those outside of Cupertino.

Replying to myself here: Even if we have a great SDK release from Apple, just how many Objective C compilers do YOU know of for Linux and Windows? And yet, Java/Eclipse/Ant all exist and work well on just about every platform out there.
Heck, we may well see dedicated OpenBSD Android hackers... *grin*

Shame there aren't any phones to actually run the code that's developed...
Apple has a large install base of 1.4 million+ and don't forget that iPhones have teh sexy. Seriously, I don't think good SDKs sell handsets. I do understand your grievances about Apple, but they have a good brand, tight UI and great industrial design, I think that's all they need in this space.
But to bring this back to a kind of WordPress oriented discussion. I wouldn't spend any time on a WPhone style Android application until there is a market for them beyond a few developers inside of Google. I don't think this is a no-brainer direction for developers like the iPhone was.
Oh... congratulations on winning the contest by the way. Do you plan to combine efforts with the other entrants to make a super-dooper plugin?

Well, technically, that'd be "consumer level" phones. A wider aray of devs outside of Google are also bound to have access to prototypes relatively shortly, OpenMoko style.

Can't really disagree with this though.

Yup, that makes sense too, unless you're in the prize money market, and is why I'll personally focus on WPhone for that platform for now. What it comes down to is that the web based paradigm works well, and has the advantage of being cross-platform.
I have bigger plans (read: pipe dreams) for Android anyway. ;)

Thanks. :)
re: merging/combining: Ultimately, if it makes sense for the product and the user base, I'm still all for it.

I've been thinking about taking our UI and using the WPhone backend but with the non-existent time I have it's not going to happen in any reasonable time.

Proof'll be in the pudding next year, I suppose. HTC looks like they've got some gnarly ideas already.

Good SDKs don't sell handsets, true, but it's ironic: Apple's good phone may end up selling a Good SDK. Prior to the iPhone, most Americans h-a-t-e-d HATED their phones, and with good cause. They're crippled, they're annoying, they're non-intuitive, and they're expensive. "Decent" mobile OSes barely existed. Then along came the iPhone and people realized that they not only could avoid hating their phones, they could even love them.
However, as the jailbreak/anti-jailbreak dance has shown, one of the biggest things that (tech-savvy) users have taken away from the iPhone is just how much potential there is in the space. Developers' frustrations with the WWDC "Safari IS our SDK" crap (I was in the room and heard the snorts of derision when Jobs tried that one on for size) are evident. They're looking for a great platform to peddle their wares _in a fashion of largely their own choosing_. It's at this last point that I predict Apple's February solution will likely fall down.
Or, I could be gob-smackingly shortsighted and we might end up with a new Mobile Delicious Generation, rendered smoke, neon glows and all.

True. Apple does simple well. Google does spartan well. It remains to be seen which ends up being more attractive to more people. I still think Google may come out the better for not being shackled hand and foot to the corpse that is at&(ptui!)t.

Oh! Thanks for reminding me!
I had really liked how modular Mobile Admin is and was considering using that idea to make our's a bit more flexible. Then again, our plan is/was to have the one interface be runnable on ALL phones and then spruce it up with additional JS and CSS depending on how powerful the phone is.
But still, plenty each plugin could benefit from each other, that's for sure.

I'm eager to get Matt's and the judge's (?) feedback to see what they have to say. :) Itchy to get their suggestions implemented, where appropriate, before starting to take on new features.
