Howdy folks!
Sorry to be so long with no input to the group.
Its been an exciting time here in Roosterville!
After 483 nights in hospital beds, I slept in our own bed last night!  Strange, but oh so good!
Interesting that the backup topic has come up.  For several months, my external hard drive has been missing.  (A long story). I had a partial backup, but only about half of my 400+ gigabytes of digital music files were there.  I was NOT looking forward to re-ripping hundreds of CDs.  Thankfully, this week the drive was located and all is well.
But I am seriously looking at backup solutions.  My current thoughts are to use external hard drives for all that music and perhaps a cloud component for pictures, documents, etc.
I am most interested in hearing what y'all are doing.
I also found my Palm Tungsten E2, and may fire it up later.  I always wanted a T3, but never did get to play with one.
I teeter back and forth between Windows and Android, with a touch of DOS thrown in by my HP200LX.  I have been quite impressed by the new HP Stream 7" tablet I got for Christmas, which runs the desktop version of Windows 8.1.  I think if it was just a wee bit larger (for tired old eyes) it might become my total solution.
Sure nice to here from this group again. I call it my mobility mastermind!
Later,
Bob

Hey Bob

Welcome back!

Despite a couple of hospital stays myself, I cannot even begin to imagine what 483 nights would be like. I must be truly wonderful to sleep at home again.

Following recent posts on external/cloud storage, I am doing the following:

  • MBP - Weekly Time Machine backups to 2TB WD HDD
  • Family W7 PC - nightly backups to 1.5TB WD HDD

In addition:

  • All movies to 500GB WD HDD
  • All RAW (i.e. non-iPhoto) photographs to 500GB WD HDD
  • Most music additionally held on my new FiiO X1 DAP
  • All documents in Documents folder sync'd to Dropbox
  • Salaried job-related materials to a 8GB thumb drive*
  • Coaching/facilitation business-related materials to a 8GB thumb drive*
  • All stuff related to our B&B business not on my MBP is hosted offshore
  • Material related to a community volunteer role held in Basecamp.com
* Some shared with colleagues via shared folders in Dropbox and OneDrive.

Planned (as my local government employer is an MS shop and doesn't like Dropbox):

  • All documents in Documents folder sync'd to OneDrive (for extra redundancy and access from work laptop)

Right, a sunny Sunday afternoon snooze beckons...zzz...

The problem I can see with backing up to external hard drives is all your data is in one physical location. A fire or other local disaster could destroy it all. Given the number of online services available I would strongly suggest you find one you like and make a full backup of everything to it.

What I do is probably overkill, but it does address that issue.

I do an automated backup to an attached USB drive three times a
day.

A couple of times a month, when I go to visit my sister who lives
50 miles away, I do a backup to a different USB drive. When I get
to my sister's, I exchange this one for the one that's there, which
will be used the next time I visit.

This does not apply to the music, which is on my drive, and is backed up
to the Google cloud.

I'm only starting to have a video collection, which is currently not
backed up at all.

Mom got to be quite a rabid fan, though...Everything I did was
sensational as far as she was concerned. Now my father, as far as
*he* was concerned I never got a hit. If I got a single, my mother
would scream, "Willie's hit a triple." And Pop would say, "Ach, the
guy should have caught it."

Yup - all good points. My HDD are next to the escape window in my bedroom so if I make it out, they'll most likely make it with me. Ultimately though, I need to go the next step with a swap-out arrangement like Laura - but my sister lives 12,000 miles away in Switzerland so I should maybe find someone closer.

I backup to dropbox -- but i do it in incrementals.

it's no use merely syncing a folder there. If you delete the files on your laptop, the delete gets synced.
Instead i run an incremental backup to a PC at home-- and that in turn syncs those to dropbox.

It's a full backup once a month, and any files that have changed every day.
