Hare Krsna Vaisnavas,

Pranam! Jaya Srila Prabhupada!

What kind of devices do you use for recording lectures, podcasts etc.?
I was looking for an device to donate to the temple here since they
still use tapes.

This is ok actually but transferring them to the computer takes a lot
of time. Also the sound quality isn't that great.

I have been considering a dictaphone or an iRiver. I was just curious
what kind of devices you use.

sita-pati pr. has some (or at least one) post about digital recording
devices, and so does candidas, on their blogs. (sorry, i'm not going to
look for the articles' URLs now since my connection is painfully slow.)

i'd advise against dictaphone, since these aren't meant for high quality
sound recording, just speach. (i assume you'd want to record the
occasional kirtan / bhajan too, not only classes.)

ys phani.

I would recommend something like this:
http://www.iriver.com/product/p_detail.asp?pidx=42

These machines are quite solid and reliable. This is what they use in
Melbourne to do the daily class recording. They have a small microphone
that they plug into it and then clip onto the mic stand.

Someone needs to be responsible for it, to make sure it is looked after
nicely.

ys,
sda

I use an iRiver iFP-895. It is very small and light (the H-series are
kind of bulky - twice the thickness of a Classic iPod). The iRiver
iFP-800 and iFP-700 series of players are unique in that they are the
only MP3 recorders that can power an external microphone. So, you can,
for example, get a non-powered condenser mic and plug it into the MP3
player to get better quality records than you would by using the pin-
hole mic that comes built into the player.

I use a mic from (cheap and good quality):
http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/gs/gs-micline1.html

Unfortunately, iRiver does not make the iFP range of players anymore.
Their newer players actually have less features than these older ones.
However, you should be able to find some iFP-7xx or iFP-8xx players on
ebay for a good price. The only difference between the 7xx and 8xx is
the design of the external case. The players are otherwise exactly the
same.

Wonderful, thank you everyone, this is very helpful :) Going to browse
Ebay a bit then.

The iRivers look very good and seem to be very suitable indeed.

Consider the Zoom H2. $200. Records at much higher quality than you'll
get from ordinary MP3 players.

Does indeed look good. The iRiver would be quite a bit cheaper, but, if you are after maximum quality and reasonable portability, this zoom recorder looks like the ticket to ride.

An indepth review:

4 hour battery life is quite meager, but the batteries can be swapped
out (2xAA) - so you don't have to wait for a recharge cycle.

iHP-100 / Digital Converter / AKG C1000S setup. Thank you Jayadvaita Swami!

$199 USD on samash.com (should workout cheaper than $299 AUD)
I've emailed to see if they'll ship here (I think they do though, I saw
someone on a NZ forum ordered from them)

Shipping will increase the cost.

Another couple of things to keep in mind:

What about warranty return? Can you get that done in NZ? A few years
back Bhakta Clayton got a cheap deal on an Aiwa minidisc from Japan, but
then ended up sending it back there *twice* to get it serviced under
warranty.

And what about the power adaptor (US 110V vs NZ 240V)?
