Hi World Outline-ers,

I'm new to Outlining and am finding my way around the OPML Editor
tools. If anyone can offer recommended reading for those unfamiliar
with "roots" and "nodetypes" - i'm all ears! :-)

Here's a question: when I browse to my /roots page and click the
little gear icon for the one root that I have, I can set my Author
Name, but when I edit the post, it seems to delete those settings and
I have to go put them in again. Am I doing something wrong?

And another question -- clearly I can create Blog posts, but is each
blog post a root? In other words, do I create a new blog post by
adding a new root?

Thanks, I will do some reading in the archives and will probably
figure it out!

Are you hitting the Submit button?

Give us the actual steps you do, otherwise it's pretty hard to say what the problem might be.

I'm going to write a howto to answer your other questions..

I have this problem too.

I've written out the steps I take here:

Thanks

I can verify I'm having the same issue - following the same steps as Lloyd, getting the same results.

In fact, it looks like I've *never* gotten the author or email fields to stick to *any* root, going back at least couple months.

Sounds like you haven't set the username pref in your local opml editor.  Misc, prefs, basic settings, username.

Dave, can you summarize the issue for me.

What was the problem they were reporting, what was the workaround/fix?

Looks like that fixed it for me, too. Thanks Dave(s)!

At the risk of looking foolish: why do we have the option on the world outline page to set an author on a per-root basis, if it's just going to be overwritten with what is (or in this case, isn't) set in the OPML Editor on the desktop?

Because it's not finished. :-)

This has been a R&D project that's turning into a product.

One step at a time.

And that's why I want to understand what the problem is.

And I totally appreciate that Dave Jones picked up the ball here, and that you guys have decided to join the community. These are all very good signs.

Sure thing.  They had left the username pref blank on their local copy of the opml editor, so it was overwriting the author field with a blank every time they edited a root and saved it from their desktop.

The author name and email address are now maintained across saves.

Tested the process as described in the worknote.

Author name remained across saves to the root.

Fix worked.
