NOTE FROM ME: Please remember to vote in the weekly survey (by late Sunday afternoon each week). Just list up to 8 of your current favorites in this format: Dance/choreographer/level (PLEASE separate with the / )

To be added to the mailing list to receive the daily newsletter, just send me an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE in the subject line and I will add you. If you ever miss a copy of the newsletter, check the website under the NEWSLETTER button to see if I have posted anything there for you to know and you can also read the previous day's newsletter at that link.
To read the newsletter faster, do a search for the word, SUBJECT. You will then be able to skip from SUBJECT to SUBJECT.

Please add in the SUBJECT line WHERE the event or class you are talking about is. The newsletter goes around the world and to someone in Singapore, WI or CA doesn't mean too much. And PLEASE remember that the subject line I'm talking about is NOT the subject line of your e-mail but a subject line that you actually type the words SUBJECT and FROM. If you do not type SUBJECT/FROM then I have to type it and fill it in and it would really, really help me if you would please do it before you send it to me. Thanks a bunch.

SUBJECT: GULFPORT CASINO BALLROOM COUNTRY DANCE (Florida)
FROM: JAY AND PEGGY STEELMAN

Howdy do agin’. This here time I’m a gonna let my alter-ego (Jay) do tuh tongue waggin’.
I am writing this message in plain old English without the ‘ol Wrangler’s colloquial patois, for those of who find it difficult to navigate the monologue portion of this announcement pertaining to the Gulfport Casino Ballroom Country Dance on Friday, July 20th 2007.
It has been mentioned to me that our lower attendance at the last Country Dance could have been partially attributed to readers falling asleep attempting to decipher the ‘ol Wranglers ramblings. I will be the first to say that he gets a little windy at times (which I will try to curtail in future monologues), but the intention is to get your attention and give you a little something to brighten your day, or a topic to cuss or discuss.
I could write the standard who, where, why, what, when and how much, but that becomes almost invisible in the wealth of comments and information contained in this newsletter.
Several factors enter into the attendance at our last event (just as it does with all such events).
I know of more than 30 of our dancers that have gone back north to escape the Florida heat, as they do every year.
We have dancers driving from 40 or more miles (one way) to participate in this four hour event. High fuel prices are now playing a large part in deciding how far one wants to drive to indulge their country dance habit.
And we have another item to contend with, the lack of advertising. Peggy and I work for the City of Gulfport, which in turn owns the Casino Ballroom. They only advertise on the Thursday preceding the dance. This does not allow a person seeking our type of entertainment much of an opportunity to make weekend plans. We are trying to make this a regular monthly event, but the ballroom is not always available. (The city hires it out for weddings, birthdays, graduations, etc.)
We are slowly building an e-mail address list so we can notify as many as possible about the next country dance (if you would like to be included in the list, send me your e-mail address. I promise I won’t sent you jokes). Word of mouth is the best advertising we can get, so please help us by spreading the word. To the best of my knowledge, the powers that be are happy with our little Country Shindig and there are no plans in the works to cancel it.
Enough chatter. I’ll lay it out plain and simple.
WHAT: Country Dance at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom
WHERE: Gulfport Florida, USA
TIME: 7PM (doors open 6:45) to 11PM
COST: $6 each
Free dance lessons from 7 to 8PM (line and basic 2 step)
Open country dancing from 8 to 11PM (we are not limited to strictly country music, but no rap)
We will be doing E/C- W/C swing, line, Schottische, waltz, 2 step, and couples dances.
Full liquor bar
5500 sq. ft. of hardwood dance floor
No smoking in the Ballroom (smoking is allowed outside on the deck over looking the bay.)
Free parking
The Casino Ballroom is located at 5500 Shore Blvd. in Gulfport Florida, USA
For further information contact the Gulfport Casino Ballroom at 727-893-1070, Peggy or me at 727-343-9304 or e-mail us at jayp...@verizon.net
We are running out of places to country dance (or so it seems here in the US), so come on out and support this event, (and all others like it) or start taking hip-hop lessons.

SUBJECT:  WHERE TO DANCE IN WASHINGTON, DC?
Hello you all.
I am heading back home to Washington, D.C. for death in family. I don't want to be sad and miserable during my trip back home so I want to spend Friday & Saturday night dancing. Is there a place in or around D.C. I can dance. I've been hearing about Rendezvous and would love to try the place out. Any suggestions?????

The thing about writing in to Carol's newsletter is
that the only ones for the most part reading it are line dance groupies....

I agree that there aren't many younger dancers. I
have only been dancing a couple years. I am 31 &
typically the youngest when I attend a workshop or
just go out dancing. I would love to take classes to
learn more, but I am limited on time.......especially
since I would have to drive an hour or more just for
lessons or to go out dancing. It would be nice to
have something closer.

SUBJECT:  SO MANY DANCES
FROM:  GRAHAM
Just thought that I would write in and answer a few of the questions that have been put up on this thread. I have had similar conversations with many US instructors and it may be of use to try and explain the dance scene here in the UK and a little bit of how and why it has evolved the way it has (in my opinion).
I'm sure I will offend some so apologies before hand
Why are so few dances in the UK to country music. This is the easiest to answer, and that's because we lost access to the vast amounts of country music that you enjoy in the US. After CMTV shut down in the UK, if a choreographer wanted to get a dance off the ground they had to convince instructors to buy a full country CD for a piece of music they had not heard, few shops sold them and those that did could charge high prices, the average was around £18 ($36). so they moved to chart music which the instructor had heard and could decide if they liked and was only around £3 ($6). Yes it has all changed with I-tunes ect but please don't think that UK i-tunes gives us access to the music that it does over there, we are still very restricted.
Next question is why are all dances harder now that years ago. the ones that seem to get mentioned regularly are Tush Push & Slapping leather but whilst these kept us interested when they were new things progress and that usually means getting harder. I don't still read the books I did whilst I was learning to read so why should I learn and teach dances of the level we danced when we were learning. I can honestly say that if I put these dances on I would have an empty floor. (sad because I still like the tush push).
And finally are there too many dances out there, well yes, but more important are there too many good dances out there and I think the answer is no. Since the internet took off anyone can write a dance and put it out to the world even if the only person who thinks it is any good is themselves. It has to be up to the instructor (and other local instructors ??) to decide what is right for themselves and their class. Having fewer dances out there would not help make them better dances.

SUBJECT: ALLEGIANT AIR FLIES TO FLORIDA
FROM: LOU ANN SCHEMMEL
I have flown Allegiant Airlines a couple of times now. They're a no-frills inexpensive airline. I recently flew Las Vegas to Wichita, non-stop, for $188 round trip. Other airlines were charging up to $600.....
Anyway I noticed on their flight map that they have lots of non-stops to ORLANDO and TAMPA from cities in the east coast/midwest area. They fly out of smaller cities, but it might be worth driving to those to save some $$, or maybe some dancers would find those cities convenient. Check it out for flying to those events in the future.....

SUBJECT: SO MANY DANCES
FROM:
pggs...@aol.com
I have been line dancing for eight years. I am a student. I love music. Almost all kinds. That's what it is all about for me. I don't care how many new dances are being taught. If I could hear the music first before the teach, and I like it, chances are I will like the dance. I don't care what the steps are, I can learn them. I think tags and restarts are necessary to keep the dance phrased with the music. To me, dancing is about moving with and in time to the music. That's where I get my pleasure. If I don't like the dance and music, I will sit it out. It's that easy....
My compliments go out to all of the choreographers who work long and hard to put a dance to a piece of music.

I had my first JG2 Longbranch Workshop. I had an awesome time. I met the most beautiful bunch of people who welcome me with open arms, wonderful smile and dancing feet. Each event I attend, I just fall more and more in love with line dancing. Joey Warren and Will were outstanding! These young men were the perfect gentlemen, who took time to show an old woman a thing or two. Congrats on there hot new dances (Come a Little Closer and Clothes Off). But there was one sexy, hot little number introduce to us by Joey called Desire by Amato. This dance is just too hot! I want to thank Renita Vega for inviting me, she is an awesome instructor. I look forward to attending the next event, until then keep dancing and smiling:-)

Subject: Too Many Dances?
From:
Te...@Shawhan.net

I agree, there are many dances out there, it seems. Is this bad, I
happen to think not. To me, it just says that the
choreographers love what they do, & are busy at work providing us with a
vast variety of dances to choose from. I love
to do dances to different types of music. I like country, pop, blues,
hip hop, oldies, even a few classical tunes. I like to
enjoy the music as much as I enjoy the dance itself. So when I love the
music, I usually love the dance, no matter if it is an
intermediate dance or a beginner dance. I have been dancing for almost
ten years. With some prior knowledge of basic
dance terminology from high school, I started out as a beginner, but
quickly became an intermediate. I love to be challenged,
& I love to just let myself get lost in a dance that I have been doing
for years, just because I feel good doing it. I have been
blessed with two wonderful instructors, ( hugs to Karen Hedges & Curtis
Smith). They both try to bring to their classes dances
that they know are being done at the events that they feel our dancers
will attend, & also dances that they know will be appealing
to the classes. They know their students, their likes & dislikes,
their levels of learning & their level of attention. They both teach
dances that they know some of us will love & that some will not love.
To appeal to all the dancers in our groups, they have to
do a little bit of everything. Some of us like the easier dances, &
some of us like the harder, more challenging ones. I feel that
because we can access so many dances, due to the Internet & things like
this great newsletter, (kudos to you Carol for your tireless
work) that our instructors have a better chance of bring to their
dancers more choice, & they can really be "up" on what is being
done, & in what area. What seems like a so-so
dance to one person, might be the perfect, most awesome dance to
another. There are a great number of talented choreographers
that I like, & I know that there are many more that I am not familiar
with. I look forward to any new dance that I can learn & I want
to keep doing the old ones that I love. I would hate to see any
choreographer limited to a schedule, that would prevent them from
putting out a dance, when maybe the music they write the dance to is
really "hot" at that moment. With any type of restriction on when
they could put out the dance, we might not get to enjoy it while the
music is really "hot". I also feel like the instructors have a huge job
on their hands, trying to find just the right dances to bring to their
classes. I have faith in both my instructors, to do just that. They both
do a great job "weeding" through dances, teaching what they know we will
like, & teaching ones they know will be played at the events
we attend. I say, bring on the dances, post them, teach the dances from
the choreographers we know put out the dances that stand the
"test of time", try out new dances from choreographers that are not so
well known, they might just be the next great one, ya never know.
I can't think of anything bad about it. I say, there are never too
many dances. Bring it on.....& dance till ya drop.

Teri, dancing till I drop in Missouri (Sorry for being so long winded....)

SUBJECT:   FLORIDA MASTERS AND TRIP TO THE UK AND SCOTLAND

I am really excited to be seeing Masters In Line (Rob, Paul and Rachael from the UK) - not once but twice in the next few weeks. I will be teaching with them at the MIL event in Orlando next weekend and then attending the MIL World's event in Blackpool the first weekend of Aug. That ballroom at the Winter Gardens is the epitome of the highest level of ballroom competition and I cannot wait just to be inside the gorgeous facility and dance on the floor that many world champions have danced on. I wanted to share my upcoming journey in case I would be able to meet some of you along the way. I will arrive at Gatwick on July 30th - staying with Carol Simmons (who is very kindly driving a long way to pick me up at the airport) and attending her class Mon. night in Essex. Tues. night will be a visit to Teresa and Vera's class (can't wait to meet them) (also Tues. lunch with good friends Tony and Viv from Essex) and then Wed. to meet Big Dave and Pauline. I look forward to attending Big Dave's class on Wed. night. I will overnight with them and drive together on Thur. to Blackpool for the MIL event. Hoping to meet up there with my dear friend Jacqui Howe and family. Also to see Show MIng, Alice Yen, others and most especially to dance and chat with fabulous Kate Sala, Neville Fitzgerald, Dee Musk(?), Scott Blevins (?) and Robbie McGowan Hickie. Robbie will be teaching at my Tampa event this Nov. which is his first visit to the USA. Hoping very much to meet Pat Stott and Charlotte Macari who will be teaching at my 2008 Tampa event if all goes well. Mon. I will be back in the Manchester area and then driving with good friends Chris and Ray on Tues. to Edinburgh, Scotland. There we will go to see the Military Tattoo and have a dance social on Fri. night before I return home on Sunday. Line dance buddies Doreen and Mike are hosting us in Scotland. Having lunch with Roz Porter and Roddy will be super fun. This should be a journey of a lifetime, and I look forward to meeting and dancing with many of you during these wonderful two weeks.

Hi all. Just wanted to let everyone know that my new dance, "It's Good To Be Us" with music sung by Bucky Covington, same title, has one little change in the Alternate ending. After teaching it at the Tim Gillis Summer Dance weekend, a wonderful choreographer, Peter Metelnick, gave me a very good suggestion. The dance will be finishing on the back wall. On the last 8 cts, dance it exactly as written and finish with a right cross over left 1/2 turn to face the front. The dance will finish exactly on the last beat. I will send in the change to Carol and Kickit asap. Thanks Peter!

To subscribe to the newsletter or to submit news for the newsletter, send an e-mail to: wvanew...@cs.com. The newsletter is sent out every Monday.
News from Susan Webb In North Carolina. JG2 held a workshop at the Longbranch in Raleigh Saturday, July 14, with two guest instructors, Joey Warren and Will Craig. It was great fun, and we learned some really good dances. James taught quite a few dances, some of which were not on the schedule but the ones I remember were Butter Beans by Christopher Petre and Waltz To-Night by Johnny Two Step, both nice B/I dances. He also taught a fun contra dance but I can't remember the name right now. Joey Warren taught his dance Come A Little Closer, which is a fun intermediate dance with 3 tags. I took this one at the Marathon, but could not remember parts of it, so was glad to get a second teach. He also taught Desire by Barry and Dari Ann Amato, which is a slow sexy dance. . . . Will Craig is a new choreographer from the Charlotte area. His two new dances, both intermediate, called Clothes Off and Something To Believe In I liked a lot. We came back to the Longbranch Saturday night and had quick reviews of all the dances taught during the day Saturday and danced from 7:00 - 9:00. It was wonderful seeing our West Virginia friends, Becky, Carmen, Seth, Christy and Eric. . . . They also brought two other of their dance classmates with them, Kay and Carmella, who I had never met before. I look forward to seeing them at some more events. Eric came home with me to spend a few days before leaving to go to the Masters In Orlando on Wednesday. He is such a sweet young man who is a Virginia Tech student, a clogger instructor and wonderful line dancer, as well. On Friday night before the workshop on Saturday, we went to Shooters in Durham to Brenda Smith's class. Seth Lilly and his mother, Christy, came to class and Seth taught one of his dances called As Time Moves On. Seth is only 15 years old, but has done a wonderful job choreographing dances and won first place for one of his dances and second place for another this year at the jg2 Line Dance Marathon.
NOTE FROM ME:  I was very impressed with the dances that Seth entered in choreography at the Marathon.  I think both of them are on our video site.  I expect big things from this young line dancer and his friends.

SUBJECT:  FLOORPLAY DAYTONA BEACH
FROM:  MARK TRAYNOR

NOTE FROM ME:  I can't attach things to the newsletter but you can write him for more info
Hello Dancers
Have any plans for Labor Day weekend? If not, hope you can join us here on the coast for a weekend of dancing and fun at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort in Daytona Beach. Begun in 2000, this event has been a strictly Shag event with Beach music (still danceable) only played. This year they are including more Swing music for us,especially late night, as well as having me on board for some WCS workshops. They will not all be beginner workshops and the better turnout we have, the more we'll hear. Either way, this will be a nice local event to come and have a nice time at a great location. Being a resident now of the Daytona area, we are in the process of 'rebuilding' the Floorplay Club here and getting more of the locals in tune with WCS. Hope youll consider giving yourself a little vacation and join us for a day or three of relaxing and dancing at the beach to close out the summer!
All info is in the attachment to this email.
Thank you
