NOTE FROM ME:  There are so many fires in our area, Clearwater, Florida, that you can't even go outside this morning because of the smoke.  You absolutely cannot breathe outside for more than maybe a couple of minutes.  I don't know how widespread the smoke is but I know there were 250 separate fires burning in Florida as of yesterday.  It's really bad in Clearwater and we don't expect any rain until maybe Sunday.   We need some serious rain dancing!!!!

SUBJECT: Fiesta Line Dance Party
FROM:
en...@sbcglobal.net
There was a lot of dancing and a lot of fun going on at the Municipal Building in Lake Mills, WI, at the Fiesta Line Dance Party held on Wednesday, May 9. The dance floor had the attention of 52 line dancers from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. We danced Rivers of Babylon (we love it), Easier Touch (wonderful Cha Cha), Mambo Humano (fun Mambo), Simplemente (great music/great dance), Diggy Liggy Lo (Cajun fun), Above and Beyond (only one tag), Betty Lou's Boogie (whew, that's fast, but fun), Bosa Nova (everybody's favorite), Rio (moves well), Step Back (nice, simple steps to good music), Stroll Along Cha Cha (old favorite), Electric Slide (old, old, old favorite), Ghost Train (circle style), Strait Down (simple and fun), The Locomotion (like a choo choo), and Stealing the Best (great for beginners). In addition to all the free style line dancing, there were nine demonstration dances respresenting the nine classes in attendance.
Carole Brubaker's classes did the following demonstrations: LD 1, Johnson Creek, did Clap Your Hands (Vivienne Scott) to My Dear Botanist; LD 2, Johnson Creek, did Gonna Dance With U (Mike Yoong) to Hoe Down Come Sundown; LD 1, Lake Mills, did Rita's Waltz (Jo Thompson) to Rose Colored Glasses; and LD 2, Lake Mills, did Come Dance With Me (Jo Thompson) to Do You Love Me.
Rita Ensminger's classes did the following demonstrations: LD 1, Karl Fischer Center, did Jazz Boogie (Rita Ensminger) to Jai Du Boogie; LD 2, Karl Fischer Center, did Good Directions (Helen Born & Nita Lindley) to Good Directions; LD 1, Watertown Senior Center, did Disco (Cindi Talbot) to Boot Scootin' Boogie; LD 3, Watertown Senior Center, did Jessico (Val Reeves) to Jessico; and LD 1, Jefferson Senior Center, did Come On And Dance (Metelnick & Biggs) to Eeeney Meenie Miney Moe.
There was a break for "snacks" on the agenda, but with all the food brought in by the dancers, it was more like a midafternoon meal. The variety of dishes was fabulous and the dessert table was scrumptious.
We even had a vote among all the dancers for a name we could use to identify our group of dancers and the winning name was Rock River Line Dancers. So if you ever see anyone at a workshop wearing that name on a shirt, that's us!
Happy Dancing,
Rita Ensminger

SUBJECT:  CLASSIC DANCES

Hi, Carol--I wonder if the emails have started flying yet about the list in the most recent newsletter.
Everybody will have an opinion, of course, and nobody's opinion will agree with everybody else's.
I like the idea of a list, but I think the ones on Kickit do a great job of differentiating among "favorite" and "most danced," i.e. the dances that are currently popular.
Any list of "classic" dances HAS to include dances on Kickit's list of "most known."
And by definition, a "classic" dance really should have stood the test of time and been around for AT LEAST one year, and perhaps even longer--the latest dances, although popular and being danced a lot now, can't be considered "classic" simply because they haven't been around long enough YET.
How about a list of dances that people ANTICIPATE will be classics? This would be sort of fun to watch evolve.
Lisa McCammon
pal...@yahoo.com
NOTE FROM ME:  So far I haven't gotten that much mail.  The list I sent is just compiled from actually being at the last event I attended (with input from others who were keeping track) compiled with the couple of events before that.  It's certainly not scientific or based on people voting for them and I'm sure I missed some.  Most known dances usually include things like Tush Push, etc., and I don't believe I've done Tush Push at an event for a very long time (and I'm NOT complaining about that!!  LOL.)   There's a survey for every occasion and when I go to the Marathon, I'll take the list I sent and add and subtract and ask a few people to help me compile them so maybe some of you can print the list and help me keep track of what's done.  Jim Harvey is great at keeping track of them, too, and so is Stacy.  Jim can't go to the Marathon because they are going to a graduation of someone in his family.  Wah.  We'll miss him and Kathleen.  I'm sure Stacy will help me keep track of the list.  Here's the link to the MOST KNOWN dances on Kickit so you can see what they are too.
http://www.kickit.to/ld/Survey.html?PHPSESSID=351078cfff268efeae290ef230c0a559

Stacy added the list I sent yesterday along with the level of the dance and if there is a video on our site or not and she'll  update that again after the Marathon.

SUBJECT:  HOW TO GET A VIDEO ON DVD AND TO THE COMPUTER
FROM:
pame...@bellsouth.net
Hi,
I’m wondering if anyone out there can help me. What I’m trying to do is make a movie transfer it to the desk top put it on a DVD and send it to my friends. Also I would like to be able to send it to my friends that have computers; via the internet. Is there any soft ware out there that can make it happen?...Pam
NOTE FROM ME:  I'm sure there are a LOT of people who would like the answer to this question and also how to get them on youtube so send me the responses and I'll put them in the newsletter.  We do have on the DANCE VIDEO how to get them on youtube if that helps.  Thanks to Nigel for sending that and I know Kathy Brown has helped people do this too.  It's at the bottom of this page

Subject: Cupid Shuffle and Two Step
from: Ginger Kozlowski,
aplj...@gmail.com

The music for Cupid Shuffle is "Cupid Shuffle" by Cupid. I found it on iTunes. I bought the "clean" version...I'm not sure how different it is from the not-so-clean version, but it's a fun little tune.

It's not like there's an official step sheet. I just kind of followed along with what I saw on the videos. Basically, I would write the step sheet like this:

Counts 1-8
Step right together, right together, right together, right touch

Counts 9-16
Step left together, left together, left together, left touch

Counts 17-24
Right heel out, right step, left heel out, left step, Right heel out, right step, left heel out, left step

Counts 25-32
Make a quarter turn left doing something fun in eight steps.( in the video they do a sort of rubber knee thing)

Now, if you like the Cupid Shuffle, maybe you'd also like Two Step, by Unk.

Here's what I found on YouTube:

It's not quite so easy as Cupid Shuffle.
I think I'd write this dance as:

Counts 1-8
slow left together, left together
slow right together, right together

Counts 9-16
Quick two steps back together
quarter turn left doing twists

Counts 17-24
Jump crossing right in front
jump out
jump crossing right behind
Jump out
Jump crossing right in front
unwind 1/2 turn
hold for two counts

There doesn't seem to be as much agreement on You Tube on how to do this dance. Seems like there are many different things being done. But this one was fun. Not as beginner-y, unless you have a bunch of kids who like jumping.

=)

SUBJECT:  CLASSIC DANCES

I am an instructor in Middle Tennessee and I could not agree with you more. There are so many good dances and there keeps being more and more and more. There are two major dilemmas that instructors have to deal with that are a major problem. One is how to have a good program when you have students at all different levels from absolute beginner to advanced and the the other is how to decide which dances to use in your classes and programs when there are SOOOO many and it is almost impossible to get a large group together where the majority know a lot of the same dances.
Thanks for your comments!

Subject: Classic Dances
From:
Dancingw...@aol.com
Years ago we would go to an event & be able to dance The only event I have been to recently that I could dance the majority of dances was the Scooter Lee D4D. I've been to events in Az, Fl, Ct, Ny etc& you could dance & yes instructors (even at lunch in Ellensville) gave you a quick teach on a dance. But now with so much out there, it is impossible to go anywhere & be able to dance. And for those of you who are thinking yeah but Scooter Lee does boring beginner stuff!!! NOT SO. In Peabody Ma last year I did Chill Factor which I hadn't done in a few years. Also why is it 1 dance 1 song!!!! Grrr!!!! a new dancer for instance does not know Watermelon Crawl if you're sick of the song USE a different one!!!!

SUBJECT:  WHERE TO START UNLOCK MY HEART
FROM:
Tonig...@wmconnect.com
There is a difference of opinion on the starting point to start dancing to unlock my heart-musice is unlove me. Does it start 2 beats before the words or on the first word of the song. Both look o.k. but obviously people have to start together. Thanks for any help.
