RFI: Space-fitting algorithm / Reading Suggestions

Hi Jonathan (et all the resourceful geeks out there),

I am working on some personal project at the moment and am doing some
research on space-fitting algorithms and I thought of this nifty
program you created way back when. Since it no doubt handles space-
fitting very well, I am wondering if you might be able to offer some
pointers for books / papers to check out regarding the different
approaches to space-packing.

Source is always helpful but my intent is more on understanding the
theories such that I can find my own solution to implementation. Any
pointers would be much appreciated.
