Hi all,

We need some more Womack DNA testers, particularly for branches of the
Womack family that have not been tested before. I have decided to try
to actively find and contact some possible participants. Remember
that participants must be males with the Womack surname (or some
variant).

From online telephone listings, I can see that there are probable
descendants of certain Womack lines still living in the places where
their ancestors lived.

For example:
1) Warmack listings in Yazoo City, Yazoo Co, MS - probable descendants
of John Warmack who died in the 1830s there.
2) Wommack listings in Troy, Lincoln Co, MO - probable descendants of
Richard Wommack and Catherine Steetman.
3) Womacks listings in south-west Ohio - probable descendants of Terry
Womacks and Roxanna Reynolds.

I want to write letters (US mail) to some of these folks to see if
they would like to participate. I will include contact info for me,
and a little bit of their Womack family history. I want to try to
trade some genealogy work, like producing a nice lineage report, in
exchange for participating in the DNA testing.

The best test on Ancestry.com is $179. That is a lot of money
nowadays for some folks, so I may ask that we create a fund to help
pay for some of the tests. We'll see how it goes. Several surname
DNA projects have created such funds.

I will probably also be asking for some help with some detective work
to find living male Womack descendants of some of these branches. I
mostly focus on genealogy before the Civil War, so some of you may be
better at finding people since then.

I would like to start with descendants of Wiley Jonithan Womack, in
the 1910 Census of Wake Co, NC.

Let me know if you have any ideas, or if you want to help in some way,

Thanks, Robert

I want to define the term "daughter-out" in terms of DNA testing.

If a Womack male (of any spelling) has no sons, or his sons have no
sons, or his son's son's have no sons, etc, the Womack name in that
particular line does not continue. In other words, the line
"daughtered-out". Many Womack lines daughtered-out long ago.

In modern times, people have smaller families, making it more likely
that a surname does not continue when they don't have a son.

What this means, is that we need to test some Womack branches soon,
before the last male Womacks in those branches pass away. If they
don't come to us, we need to try to find them for DNA testing.

Nothing against daughters - I have two girls, 4 and 2, and they are
great!

Hi Robert,
Are you still working on the Womack DNA project? I am working on finding some male Womack surname relatives from my line to agree to be tested. I was tested on ancestry.com, but being a female with a different surname I am afraid I am not much help. If the group is still active, I will pursue finding relatives who agree to be tested. My line is Abraham James Womack (b Miss Terr d Trinity Tx)
Hope the group is still active! Thanks, Janice

I do have quite a few Womack surname matches on my Ancestry DNA matches and some of them are male if that helps.

Thanks, but I am pretty sure the Ancestry DNA matches are for autosomal DNA, which is good for finding cousins to about 5th cousins, or 6 generations back.

For the Womack surname DNA tests, we are using a different type of DNA test, Y-DNA tests, which test the father-to-son line, and are good for hundreds of generations back.  For most of us, the Womacks in early colonial Virginia are at least 12 generations back.

Robert, I was just thinking that if they are on Ancestry that you have contact information to ask them to do the other DNA test.
