There's no easy way to write this.

Damn. Just... damn.

I'm going to try to find out more about the ADA/AHA funds... in the meantime, please take a moment to sign the guest book and/or post on Tom's Facebook page. Anyone still have contacts at the show?

You're right, there is no easy way to pass on news like this, and I think, for us anyway, no way to share it but with sadness and humor combined.

Unfortunately, the one person who would have come up with the best Deadpool headine...

God, Tom was the longest lasting online friendship I have had.

Oh my God.  I don't even know what to say.  I just put this on his Facebook page, but I think I've gotten more e-mails from Tom than any other person, ever.  I don't know what my inbox would look like without him.

Totally disoriented.

The last message I see from him on the list was this:

"Have you seen the pics of Mary Magdalene un US magazine? Total skank."

To be in the room when he explains away THAT... successfully, I am sure.

Laughing to fend off whatever... going to step outside for a bit now.

First, I am shaking right now.  I can't believe how this has hit me.

Second....FUCK!!!!!!!

Third, here's what I have put on the guest book.  Not my best writing, but I hope I have captured what I feel.

The shock I am feeling right now in finding my online friend is over-whelming.  The saddness at this unexpected loss (at least from my corner of the world) shakes me to my core.

I have been lucky enough to have corresponded with Tom for the last 13 years.  Often with shared humor, or anger, or indignation.  Tom was able, in so many ways, to allow us to raise our intelligence level a notch or two just by adding his opinion.

I never met Tom in person, but I can say honestly that he has impacted my life forever.

Although he has left this earth, he will never be gone because his many insights will stay with me as long as I am alive.
I pray that you will find peace in the midst of your sorrow.

May his memory be a blessing to you for the rest of your lives, as his memory will continue to be a blessing to me.

Finally, let us all remember the many ways in which this man impacted each of us, no matter that we probably never met and never even spoke in person or over the phone.

And so it goes,

Kevin Brabant (only because of Tom can I say....Air-Cooled)

Tom - Tom - Tom -- I am sending this message to you from a job I have now.. day thing. I feel a real urge to gently weep -- and you know I never met you in person. Sure we chatted on the phone and IM, especially around 1999, and exchanged gifts and weird mail. The March from Clockwork Orange plays in my iPod and I dedicate it to you. We haven't kept in touch much over the past year or so -- save via the WNN list. Man! Tom the pit I felt when I read the news was stunning, deeply saddening. My eyes water as I type this. We will all miss you.

This is gonna get unwieldy if there are a billion cross-posts but Barry weighed in on the Facebook thread -- it seems like this is something that should be in our archives here --

Barry Mitchell at 4:08pm May 7
Tom was an amusing, astute observer of pop culture, an excellent writer, and as an early proponent of the internet, convinced me that starting my own website was a good idea. He was a guy from the heartland with a good heart and quick wit. And somewhere among his possessions I'm sure there are more than several 1992-vintage WNN mugs :)

For those of you inclined and able to make donations in his memory (damn, that's weird to write):

AHA donation page:
https://donate.americanheart.org/ecommerce/aha/aha_index.jsp
(Click on "Memorial," I guess... A mailing address is required - I guess one could use the funeral home:
Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home

ADA page:

Wonder what it would take to get a "Yo, Tom" screensaver on the show...

Well, they're monitoring Facebook, at least, and it was the official WNN Facebook Page that started the thread on which Barry commented a bit ago.  So whether someone at the show still lurks here or not, someone there has been advised of this, and that it matters.

This is what I posted on the guestbook:

Tom was my oldest online friend, and probably the best person I know to be proof that online friendships are somehow less meaningful than those we share with people in our in-person daily lives.

We met on the World News Now mailing list, it is true, but we shared a variety of interests, from TV shows to humor to music, to similar ideals on how the world could be a more loving, accepting place.

I had a lot of fun co-writing haiku with him for an annual Valentine's Day website contest, and applauding as he won awards for it. I know he did the same when I won. Best of all was the enjoyment we shared working together. There's nothing like having a friend who really gets you, and engages your wit and creativity. That was Tom.

Tom was also the person who remembered you, your loved ones, and all they were into. He'd send me books, articles, and other things he knew my dad would enjoy.

I wish he had had many more than 37 years to share his inimitable gifts with the world, but am betting he made more of an impact on a diverse group of people than many do in 73 years.
"
" miss him" doesn't begin to cover it.

showed a video clip that Tom had sent in of his portraying

I knew he had been ill - but apparently, I didn't know how ill.

I think I'm still in shock - 37 seems way too young.

I'm not sure how sentimental he'd have wanted us to get - he wasn't known as the "LB" for nothing ^_^; - and I can't think straight right now - so I'll just leave it that he'll be truly missed.

Just damn. This one hurts. A lot. Aaron just told me on Facebook...

Tom, you and Kip have a cold one on me.

Here's what I posted on the guestbook -- it says more than I can think to say now....

Tom was someone who I shared more than just platitudes with.

We never agreed politically, but we agreed on the good things. We shared good times and bad times. We shared joy and anger. We simply shared. Shared much over the years.

He shared himself with so many. I'm just thankful to have shared with him.

No, that's just not fair. That's not right.

Karen, hope you don't mind:

I brushed up my rusty web composition skills and put this up on
Nowbie.net (with credit to you) along with a short memoriam.

Though the page has always existed as a historical document...Tom's
passing could not go unnoted.

This is really sad....especially to infrequent WNNDL posters such as myself.

I remember Tom being frequently active from my earliest days on the list.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

From an even more infrequent poster than JSB… but constant reader for a lot more than a decade…. I joined back before Rose was the listmom.

I am so totally stunned.

I, also, only know Tom from this list. I frequently was livid over his rants. And I loved him for every one of them.

No one else could ever have played the role of List Bastard the way Tom did.

Unfortunately, I got the email while I was at work… where I teach. I had to go outside and get a grip.

Outside of this list, I doubt that we exchanged more than a few dozen emails over all of these years…. And a lot of those were “No shit, I agree completely!” or “You are SOOOO totally wrong, dude!”

Now, I wish we had exchanged a lot more.

His wit, words, and yes, rants…. shall be missed by all of us.

It’s not very often you never even meet someone, yet feel like you’ve known them your entire life. Tom was like that, at least to me. I only wish I had taken the 15 seconds to hit “reply” and told HIM that.

I think _I_ have to say….. “Yo, Tom”

I always hated the list Octobers. Why do we have to have on in May?

Now I must set the DVR to record WNN tonight.

Ric

Still on the list, and not going anywhere.

Magnificent Bastard indeed...

I've been lurking here for well over a decade & Tom has been one of the constants.  It's hard to believe the list still exists without him.  Whether you laughed with him or argued with him, it's undeniable that his presence was a huge part of this community & he will be sorely missed.

Yo, Tom!

I hadn't realized how young Tom was. In many ways he was wiser than his age, and seemed far too curmudgeonly to be so young. A tragic loss. My heart goes out to all his  friends.

I’m really saddened by this news as well.  You’ll be missed, Tom.

There's no easy way to write this.

Tom Heald, aka Tomalhe, aka List Bastard, passed away on Monday.  Notice reprinted below (see http://tinyurl.com/ddvfl2 for original).

Damn. Just... damn.

I'm going to try to find out more about the ADA/AHA funds... in the meantime, please take a moment to sign the guest book and/or post on Tom's Facebook page. Anyone still have contacts at the show?
