If you have a moment, could you please share with me what typing program/book/app you might be using with 2nd or 3rd graders?  Our district has not had formal instruction at these levels and is considering it.

If you reply directly to me, I’ll prepare a spreadsheet of results to share on list serve, avoiding the overload in all inboxes.

Albany purchased the Keyboarding First program when elementary teachers were going to begin teaching keyboarding to students 1st -4th grade seven years ago.  The program is ok, it is just that the keys are not introduced in the traditional manner, ex. h e, i r, etc.  I was already using PAWS at the 5th grade level, so now we use a combination of traditional methods and Keyboarding First.

At elementary level, I really like just verbally introducing the keys and having students do drills.  I think working with a keyboarding software program and a book creates more confusion and wastes time when you only have elementary students for a few minutes periodically.

I like doing simple drills for elementary students using the traditional method of introducing keys and showing them with the projector either on my screen or the Smartboard.
