Just talked to support ... the usenet plug is indeed going to be pulled in
early November, he was surprised that the announcement was somewhat hidden.
MTS will loose many customers because of this foolishness.

Over the next few days everybody on MTS should send MTS e-mail asking how
much our monthly rate is going to be discounted based on the reduced package
we will be receiving. I mean everybody on MTS, absolutely flood them with
polite enquiries, starting Friday evening.
If only a few of us do it, not much is likely to happen, if most of us do
it, it will get their attention.

I recently switched to Eternal September which is a *free* news server.
Access is limited to text-only newsgroups, such as this one.

Windows Live can do newsgroups, poorly, but it sort of works. I like
Thunderbird much better myself.
One huge thing I like about news groups is that it is uncensored by it's
definition. Harder for our thoughts to be controlled, edited and
managed. Hopefully it will survive, even though I am sure the
government wants it gone.

Agreed. Newsgroup feeds and services are not exactly expensive when
ammortized over the whole subscriber base. Take Shaw, at least 5 million
customers. Say $2 for each per year, much less than 1% of the take, for
$10 million a top rate newsgroup service should be trivial and lucrative.
But in cost cutting, likely a target as most subscribers probably don't
use the services. So they can chop it and not tick off too many
subscribers. That is the reality.
Hopefully the tide will reverse in the future, as there are not too many
"Blogs" that allow unmoderated comments like usenet does.

There is a logic problem with businesses following the cost cutting
scenario. If they cut 100% of their staff, services, taxable assets,
etc. they could achieve not just zero costs but zero income as well.
There is no reason customers would continue to pay for products and
services they aren't going to receive. I'm not going to walk up to an
MTS outlet and say "Here! Take my money. Abuse me. I don't want anything
in return.".

Logically if they are going to take something away they should
compensate the users in some way. Switching to a terrible product (based
on comments I've heard from American friends) such as Microsoft Live is
just thumbing their nose at their customers. If MTS doesn't want to be
in the internet business any more then they should either sell out or
close their doors. Sprint and Verison want into Southern Manitoba. This
is the perfect opportunity for them to sell off more assets and make a
quick buck.

There are numerous satirical cartoons which point out the extreme end
of cost cutting better than I could. If a company sees its greatest
expense as the workers they could cut them down to zero. But there would
be nobody to do anything. As a reseller, they could cut the product they
purchase. But they could run out of product to sell. Instead MTS have
chosen to substitute a reasonable (but not fantastic) product with
something of much lower value while charging the same price. The
customers are justifiably annoyed with this.
OTOH there are potential ways to cut costs. Selling empty buildings,
reduce duplication of services, find a wholesale supplier which will
sell the same or better services at a better price. Recycling obsolete
material. Are 5000 licenses of Windows and Office better for the
business than spending $75/year for tech support of a commercial Linux
install and Open Office? Is it better to pay a *NIX person twice the
going rate of an MCSE if they can do 50 times the work (and do it properly)?
All this is close to getting off topic. I wouldn't count on MTS to
lower their prices. They are likely to increase them and have Microsoft
bill separately. I wasn't impressed with their demands for $10/month
just for an e-mail account (early 90's) from the $5/month I was paying
MBNet. As a consumer I asked if I was getting value for the money I was
spending and came to the conclusion it was better to walk away from the
deal. If people here with MTS want newsgroup access there are a finite
number of solutions. Pick one and stick with it.

I didn't even realize the news server was getting shut down until
today when | tried to access it. I phoned technical support and they
confirmed that the newsserver has been shutdown - the support person
wasn't sure if it was even shutdown so he had to go ask his manager
and put me on hold for a while.
I sent an inquiry to MTS today asking how much they are going to
decrease my bill by since they are no longer giving me the services I
was paying for. Urrrrgggg so frustrating.

The notice that the newsgroup server was going to be shutdown was hidden on
the MTS site. I don't think many knew this was happening.

2009, that service was no longer offered. The demand for newsgroups
has decreased significantly over the last few years as customers have
found more exciting ways to share information on the web. Therefore
the majority of telephone companies have discontinued this service.
As this was a free service, there will be no reduction in your
monthly Internet rate.

call center is open for billing inquiries weekdays from 8AM to 6PM,
