Just a word of advice on buying a used vehicle....spend the extra $50 and do
an online check of the car. I looked at this car on Monday and gave $100
deposit cheque to the seller.
http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-Saturn-2002-Saturn-L-Series2-
Fresh-Safety-Like-New-Low-Ks-PRIVATE-W0QQAdIdZ158202774

Seller said he had the car for a few months but did not know of any
accidents. (he's probably still saying the same thing now) Was going to pay
the balance today and pick up the car until I did a check yesterday and
found this....

http://reports.carproof.net/view_report.aspx?id=C8149EA02DA11E

Found out the car was a write-off in 2007 with over $6700 in damages. Also
told me in the report that the car was had been only registered on Sept
15.....2 weeks ago.....Put a stop payment on my cheque and sent the report
to the seller.

Well worth the money......

Those reports don't always tell the whole story. You lucked out on this one,
but the best way to tell if a vehicle has had body work done is to have it
inspected by a professional or someone with body work experience. There will
always be tell tale signs. With 6700 in damage, there will be creases in the
frame and pieces not quite matching.

CBC Marketplace did a story on the "car report" thing last year. Link
follows.

if you are serious about buying a car and have financing pre-arranged with
your bank/credit union, your loans person can do a lien check.

Just goes to show that the only way to buy anything is to use an expert if you are not an expert in that field. Don't listen to the
seller - it matters not a bit what they say unless its negative. And that could easily be said to mask a more serious problem.
There are so many ignorant people in this city, and most any city, its best to just focus on one thing: the product you're buying.

So what are the websites that people advise to use? Googling brings up quite a bunch of them. And they really should be for North
America since with our high dollar right now there's going to be a lot more buying south of the border than before.

There are a lot of small car dealers that are in winnipeg who sell mostly
rebuilt cars (writeoffs) from out of province with clean titles. not all
private insurance writeoffs will show up on carfax etc. i have been in the
collision industry for 20 years and the best way to know the history is to
get a pro to check it out. not all write offs are from heavy collisions,
there are also floods, thefts (stripped) hail, fire roll overs etc. which
will not show any structural damage but the price should be adjusted as
such. i was just in the market for a nice car for my wife and went to a
small dealer on regent avenue as he had a perticular car i was looking for
and claimed it was never in an accident. within 2 minutes i could tell that
the car was drifted hard in the right side and in the front before. when i
told him, he said he didn't know. Bullshit! these guys buy these cars and
put white out on the salvage listing, photocopy it and sell it as a clean
title.

The record you show lists it as having been rebuilt in Manitoba. That would
have been on the TOD. I suggest that is the first document anybody ask to
see. It is possible for out-of-province, especially out-of-country major
rebuilds to be missed, but the telling thing in this report is that is was
already registered as a rebuilt vehicle in Manitoba. That designation never
gets removed.

TOD - Transfer of Ownership, is the right hand side, not the registration,
but the ownership side, with the description of the vehicle that the seller
has to sign on the back. The name of the seller has to match the name on
the ownership, which isn't always the same as the registered owner.

It's too bad you can't do a fact check before buying a new car too.

A number of years ago I took a vehicle out for a test drive. I liked it, so
a couple of days later my wife and I went back to the dealer so she could
check it out.

It drove like a completely different truck. After we got back to the lot, I
looked under the rear end and there were two fresh tears in teh frame. I
think someone else took that truck out for a boot and had something of a
mis-adventure. The tears were from the tow-truck's hooks.

If you are buying used, import it from the USA. You can research the
history nline for $10 or so.

I almost bought a older Mustang GT convertible of Kijiji a couple weeks ago.
Owner said it was from the States with 114,000 miles on it. Seemed pretty
anxious to sell and kept bumping up the ad and lowering the price. I was
about to go down and have a seriuous look at it until I ran the Carfax.
Turns out the car had 214,000 miles and not 114, 000. Big difference there
and when I told the owner about the discrepency he said thanks but I just
sold it. So if anyone bought this car I would call the owner back:

1993 FORD MUSTANG GT CONVERTIBLE , 114000 M, 5 Speed Manual, Flowmasters,
BBK Headers, New BFG ZR tires, New Ford Racing Clutch, Cable, Quadrant,
Firewall Adjuster, BBK Cold Air Intake, BBK Control ...
