Hello - I'm trying to convert DVD VOB files to AVI using WinFF and
whenever I try it returns this message. I've tried different output
presets and 1-pass and 2-pass and I don't know what else to do. Can
anyone help?

Hi,

As I never have tried to encode VOB files, I am not sure if it is
possible with Winff/ffmpeg. Quite common DVD's are protected and you
need ripping software to get them off.

But for us to help further, please post the complete output (not only
the last error message).

What OS are you using?
Which version of Winff?
Where did you get Winff and how did you install it?

Using WinFF to deal with .vob files is common for me, and always works
to my delight. VOB file may get tricky as they are sometime split
across what you might deem as the section you've chosen. This is the
nature of VOB files. They are similar to MPEG-2 files except the
information embedded within them. The VOB contains "file offsets and
time duration of all chapters" that the MPEG file doesn't include. I
can't say that WinFF would convert the VOB to MPEG-2 without re-
encoding. The answer to that would be interesting, but since you want
to go to .avi re-encoding is going to happen anyhow.
Encrypted DVD files are another conversation that would get into
decrypting the DVD. The encrypted VOB files may not even drag from
the dick to your machine, as they may not even individually play from
within the VIDEO_TS folder where they are found when exploring the DVD
disk.
If the VOB files are encrypted where ever your attempting to get them
for your conversion then you'll have several roadblocks. Then is you
do encounter a method to decrypt them (which is probably not legally
recommended) then you'll have to hope that what your wanting to
convert to .avi is not "split" accross more that one of the VOB
files. Generally those files are split in 15 minutes sections on the
DVD Disk. At that point the tool VOBMerge will be of interest to
you. Included will be an option to merge the VOB files into either a
new single VOB file or an MPEG-2 file. The MPEG-2 file may be a good
choice that can produce unbuggy files without re encoding.
I wish I knew if I'm allowed to mention a free DVD Decryper program
that actually has the option included to create the merged file, since
WinFF does the VOB to AVI conversion for me.
A huge 4Gb or 9Gb VOB file may not be what you want to deal with.
That's why I mention working with only the section your interested in,
and that it might be split across two VOB files inside the VIDEO_TS
folder on the DVD disk.

Hi Paul,

I was ready to send you all of the information you requested until I tried
something with Winff. After quite a bit of time, I found that if I set the
"Preset" to XviD Widescreen, the "Convert To" window to AVI and either check
or leave blank the "2 Pass" box under Video options, and leave all other
boxes blank under the "Options" button, there was no problem. I tried
converting with both 1 pass & 2 pass and I found no discernable difference.
Either way, I ended up with an AVI file half the size of the original M4V
file that played just fine. I thought I had done this before but I must have
screwed up somewhere else. Previous problems with Winff apparently had to do
with me filling in all the fields under the options button per the Winff
documention. However, I do appreciate very much all of the time you've spent
working with me trying to resolve these problems. I think it's safe to close
this ticket.

Thanks again. Carl

Hmm. If there are options which cause the encoding to fail, I think
there is something that we should fix in Winff. If it not too much to
ask, could you try to find out by filling the fields one by one, which
causes the problem? I am pretty sure that I tested all the options with
my videos, but you apparently have a different one. Maybe it is one of
those incompatibilities that we don't know in advance, but maybe it is
something that is connected to an other option we should set at the same
time.

Argus, thanks for this info.

If the answer would be that it is possible to do this without
re-encoding, wouldn't that make a great preset? Maybe I can encourage
you to investigate?

If you mean, if you are allowed to mention it on this list, sure, go
ahead. As long as people stick to Winff related stuff it should be fine
on this list, i.e. don't go advertising other stuff just as is, but some
things can be done better with other tools.

Paul, when reviewing media info of VOB files the variables of
individual files are different for each source DVD Disk. My knowledge
of creating a command line to re-mux the file to MPG is limited, in
fact I have no idea what would do it. I know I used the terms stating
hopes of a conversion without re-encoding, but what we want and what I
should have said was re-mux. I read that some will simply edit the
file extension from .vob to.mpg. IMO don't do it. There are a few
free programs that will re-mux the file. I was using one that I paid
for until I got involved in this thread. Now if I simply want to re-
mux a VOB to MPG without editing chances are I'll use one of the
items I just found. They are almost instant. However WinFF will
convert a VOB file to MPG just fine. If you'd like to know what
programs I've discovered please ask and I'll mention them here. I
will say one of them doesn't even install anything.

Output one field at a time.txt
Output when framerate entered.txt

Problem is at the beginning.

Your preset is not correct. Did it come with Winff? There are are
multiple -b's in the preset, with the second case having the wrong
units. That is where ffmpeg is complaining about. Please fix the preset
and try again.

Now here you added the video frame rate, but the units are wrong. As
this is the first field in the command line, the error is now different.
Please DON'T add the unit in the Winff option box, it will be added
automatically if needed.

Hello,
i used preset available from the window. I think it is 'widescreen pal' (sorry, i 'm not in front of my desktop).
Then i changed value in option window (ie : bitrate , HD scale , window ratio 16:9).
For some files it works, for some it won't... That's why i was wondering if moving to command line will rive better result ?
