Juan,
Nice session! Sorry I missed it, just got back in town. You may have hit the last day of the year. Where was Dan, Tammy and the man formerly known as "The Ironman"??

The warm 80 degree weather made it tempting drive to Carlyle, but the low wind forcast and potential flooding situation at Carlyle discouraged me from kiting.
Instead, I biked the Chubb Trail Saturday. The 6 day dry spell made it a sure bet for good biking, and it was. The flats were too wet along the Merramac, but the technical areas in the rocky high area were in good shape, and that is what I went there for.

Richard,
You should definitely look in to Council Bluff down by Patosi! We went there Saturday, the lake is gorgeous, and the ride was awesome! Unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish the ride, somehow I managed to bore the crankshaft out where my pedal came out, causing me to ride the next 5 miles with only my right food, yet it was still a great ride.
My buddies and I actually want to take my Vanguard 15 sail boat down there in the near future!

Matthew,
I've not heard of Council Bluff near Potosi, so I'll have to check it out. Interestingly, I met a guy at the Chubb Trail before the rains. He was training for a race at Council Bluffs, IA, or so I thought. I mentioned I was born in Council Bluffs and talked briefly about the old motorcylcle trails in the loess hills. Now I wonder if he meant Council Bluff at Potosi. As a side, this guy was walking his very expensive bike and had smashed his front graphite composite rim on a rock.
The same thing happened to my right pedal at the Chubb about 10 years ago. I was just over the highest point from the Chubb Trailhead. The crank arm did have just enough thread for the pedal to stay in the bore for a careful mostly coasting ride back to my vehicle. I presume your pedal is fine, but you'll have to buy a pair a cranks. I recall I bought a slightly longer set and was happy with them.
By the way, do you do a lot of bunny hopping? I think that is what stripped my crank threads.

Rich,
When I was riding 3 days a week in Colorado and doing our annual Moab trips in May and September I would be bunny hopping quite a bit because some of those trails were a bit more technical, but I am not going to lie; Saturday was the first time in about 2 or so years that I got back on to my mountain bike. I just hadn’t been able to convince my buddies to get back or introduce them to single track riding, we all got pretty deep in to street cycling and riding everywhere, which lead us into the triathlons this summer.
I think our goal for the end of 2009/ beginning of 2010 is to get at least 1 new trail a month, and continue to ride street on Sundays. Just can’t stop pedaling. If you ever want join us, let me know. We have all kinds of different levels of riders, I have a feeling most times we will have between 3-9 of us to share the adrenaline rushes. My goal is to get them to finally come to Moab with me in May or sometime in the near future.
Yeah, my Chameleon is about 10 years old, and I still love this bike so much! Yet the only problems I have so far is I broke the derailleur with a wicked crash; which in my opinion was awesome, the tubeless tires didn’t work out so well for me, and the crankshaft, not too shabby for a 10 year old bike that for a long time was getting knocked around in all kinds of ways!
Have you done Berryman yet? My buddy Lambert and I feel like we used do that one in High School, but we can’t remember what the trail looks like.

10 year old bike? I ride a 1989 Fisher HK. No suspension, probably weighs about 85 pounds! I'm afraid Rich and you would leave me in the dust. Perhaps we'll do a windsurfing/kiting/sailing group mountain bike ride some weekend.
BTW Matt, what triathlons did you do this summer?
Chris |
Chris,
My buddies and I did the Tour de Kirkwood and the Alligator Creek out in O’Fallon. They were pretty incredible. Alligator Creek had some awesome hills, but the run did me in pretty good, I think I ran half and walked the other half. I am not a good runner, but I def. tried! The bike ride was all right, I should have been faster, but this year Tracy; my wife and I were in the process of getting ready to get married, and that took up almost all of our free time, so… I only made it on my road bike maybe 10 times, 2 of them being for the triathlons. This year I hope to get a lot more pedaling going on!
Did you get into any this past summer?

I have ony single tracked on the Chubb and Cliff Cave. I also have no suspension. I own a 9 or 10 year old aluminum Cannondale and a steel 1993 Diamond Back. I actually prefer riding the Diamond Back but haven't gotten around to changing tires and the bar ends to try it out again.
I recall riding with Tony at the Chubb about 1995. Tony was a windsurfer at the time. Chris will remember him. I believe he moved to Denver for better bike trails. Anyway, I could ride downhill faster than Tony the first few times we road together. He was faster uphill. One or two weeks later he had front suspension, and could blow me away downhill.
There is a rocky area on the Chubb called "The Steps". I hadn't ridden the Chubb for about 9 years until about 4 months ago. There are several points on The Steps that have been modified for bikers to launch off the top and drop probably 8' or more onto a rough rocky sloping surface. I haven't seen anyone go off yet, but I presume they are using full suspension bikes, probably very good suspension.
The large chainring on the Diamond Back is nearly stripped of the teeth from practicing cranking up "The Steps" in the 90's, and the original chain ring was replaced for the same reason. However, a stripped large chainring is no problem for me on the Chubb, because I have no need for higher gears on that trail.
I actually owned two 1993 Diamond Backs. I bought the first one in 1993. I bought the 2nd in 1995, because the first one was so damaged from nearly daily summer rides on the rocky parts of the Chubb. The less technical areas were flooded those years. I then started taking unbroken parts from the older bike, including a large chain ring, which means I have gone through 3 chainrings. I finally discarded the first bike frame just 2 years ago. I used to returned home bloody many times.
About 1999 I could get to the highest point on the Chubb in less than 14 minutes. The best I could do this summer was 19 minutes. I could get from one end to the other in 39 minutes and the best I did this summer was 54 minutes. I think it is only going to get worse from now on.
I recall running up and down the trail while changing snake bite flats trying to avoid misquitos. I'd run at 25 psi tire pressure to get better traction while practicing technical areas or trying for no-dab rides. I recall seeing ticks walking on the ground below me while bunny hopping. I fell into poison ivy often and fortunately only got very small patches of outbreak on an elbow, or forearm or calf. I got injured during muddy rides because my cleats were stuck in the pedals from mud. I was frequently injured slipping on slippery wet limestone during those flooding rainy times.
These days, my girlfriend Melanie gets very angry when I get blood on her towels and sheets, and burrs come off my cloths in the washer or dryer, and mud flakes on her floors. :-) I only laugh because I feel so "cool" and "awesome" having survived another ride, and she only thinks I'm an ...
idiot.

Matt,
I actually started the Shrewsbury Rocks! triathlon last year. Rented the Shrewsbury pool, set up a bike/run courses, designed T shirts, had a post event BBQ We had 38 people show up. City of Shrewsbury heard about "my little event" and decided to make it an "Official City Event". Had 70 people this year and raised almost $1000 for a couple local charities. Next year we'll have to cap the event at 100 because of pool size limitations. The distances are similar to the Tour of Kirkwood Tri, but our swim is twice as long. It's non-timed and non-competative. I call it "the triathlon for the rest of us". Perhaps you and your wife or other windsurfers/kiters could join us next year.
Besides the Shrewsbury Tri, this year I also did the New Town Tri, St. Peters Rec-Plex Tri, MAC Tri, and the Principia College Tri.....which was a killer with some big hills on the bike and a 6+ mile run at the end. Ugh....felt old after THAT one.

Chris,
That is awesome that you created your own Triathlon, and it is even more incredible that the city of Shrewsbury made it an annual event! You should feel very accomplished! I think Tracy and I could def. come to the 2010 Shrewsbury Rocks Triathlon, when you know the date, please let me know! I would be more than happy to spread the word to some of my buddies about it as well!
Tracy and I went to watch a few of our friends compete in the St. Peters Rec-Plex Tri; and that was a lot of fun to see from the sidelines. I was able to photograph both of them at different times, which ended up allowing me to create an awesome montage of both Rebecca and Al. Al actually placed in the top 5 I think! They still have yet to see their holiday gifts!
That is very cool, which local charities did you donate to? I know that Tracy and I would definitely get more involved.
I would like to do an Olympic for the summer of 2010! I just really don’t like the running part and my knees are starting to give me problems. So… we will see. I actually had to cancel my snowboarding trip this year due to my knees.
Life goes on though! I have to save my knees for my future kids!
|
The two local charities were Nurses for Newborns, and the Shrewsbury Lions Club. Sorry about the knees, but sometimes when mine start to hurt, it's because I haven't been running enough!
