Leo,
Although there are no eathquakes in Brazil, I was always told that you
should stand under a doorway or crouch near the corner of a room,
away from glass and gas.
I have found this online
http://www.spring8.or.jp/en/support/download/publication/safety_handbook/publicfolder_view

Warm regards from Brazil,

Hi Leo and Bee,

I've heard this too - however in light of the scale of the earthquake in China, it seems that that may not be the best idea. There are so many people buried under buildings, that will never be rescued in time....one wonders if it's a better idea to get out of a building while there's time....

The link I sent does not give you much information and is aimed at
workers of a particular company but I thought it had a nice structure
which could be used and made into a booklet to be distributed, with
suggestions for safety activities and drills at schools.
Warm regards,

Hi Bee,

Whether it's a booklet, module or Handout4Teachers, I get the point - highly-relevant educational material which can make a significant difference to the grassroots, or anybody really.

There's got to be a ton of learning material out there - focused on disaster management, contingency planning, mobilisation, etc. The trouble is, it may not be 'free and open' - so that it can be localized for regional / local or specific uses.

There's the carrot and stick approach:

The stick involves shaming folks, until they say "Yes, we'll give it up"...
The carrot involves creating opportunities for folks: "Give us your content, and the best and brightest in our community will update it for you / with you, and naturally you'll get a copy...."

Another approach, which leverages both the carrot and stick - is to do both, and then find ways to help people feel good about the process, WikiEducator, and get them further involved.

So, maybe we can look towards identifying who might have such particular content....

- Randy

PS. There is a strong connection here to Community Media as well, another project node on WikiEducator.

We were taught to hide under desk. But I saw from Discovery channel,

the best way is to hide beside something like bed, table etc, so these furniture could stand the falling concerts and provide some precious space for people to thrive in.

Not that people don't care, there are lots of aids coming from worldwide, people do care and donate …

It's very sad, I could not even bear to listen the description of the sad scenes

Here is a link to a NZ public awareness and readiness campaign. If you can find the TV ads they are particularly good. Covers things like "where might you be if a disaster strikes? On the bus home? Out shopping? How will you contact loved ones? What things to always carry with you. How to be prepared always".

This is really interesting stuff - I like the earthquake simulation - http://www.eq-iq.org.nz/quakehouse/

Also, I found a disaster game  (writeup) - http://www.mediastudio.unu.edu/en/tags/disasters/

The Virtual University of the Small States Consortium (VUSSC) has a course in disaster management - my understanding is that the content can be used freely - much of it was developed on WikiEducator....

http://www.googlesyndicatedsearch.com/u/COL?q=disaster&domains=www.col.org&sitesearch=www.col.org - link from Google Search on COL site;

http://www.col.org/colweb/site/pid/4999 - VUSSC Disaster Management course

If there's enough interest, maybe folks could cluster around the development of this content.....Also, I see a natural connection with the Community Media project node - www.wikieducator.org/Community_Media - where in prep. for disaster - Community media and radio could educate folks on what to do / not to do through educational programming...

Your thoughts?

- Randy
