I have been playing around with various templates for a course I would
like to give on writing for EFL high school learners. The best
template I found is protected: http://www.wikieducator.org/Template:ProjectNav

Any suggestions on a template I can use for a list of links. I have
played around with http://www.wikieducator.org/EFL_Writing_Practice
but I don't like it.

Thank you.

That template is typically used as the foundation for a
project-specific template. For an example, look how
http://www.wikieducator.org/Template:Community_media_nav builds on
Template:ProjectNav.

Hi Jim,
Thank you. Can I use the project specific template?

I may be misunderstanding... but what I was suggesting was taking one
of the existing project navigation templates (like the
http://www.wikieducator.org/Template:Community_media_nav example) and
making a new copy called something like Template:EFL_writing_nav and
editing/tuning it to suit your project.

Jim

P.S. I'm one of the folks that is on IRC irc.freenode.net
#wikieducator channel a lot if it is useful to chat in real time.
(You can get there through the "Web chat" link of the community
section of the WikiEducator navigation bar if you don't already have a
preferred IRC tool.)

Hi Jim,
Yes, that's exactly what I understood.
Thank you.

Hi Nellie --

We have a tutorial which explains how to use our two main categories of navigation templates:

1) Navigation templates for project and community nodes and
2) Templates for structured content

See:

http://wikieducator.org/Wikieducator_tutorial/Navigation_templates

Hope this helps :-)

Hi Wayne,
Yes, I saw all the tutorials. I just happen to like the one that is "protected". :)

Thank you.

Hi Nellie,

The navigation templates are "high risk" templates because they are used throughout the wiki and sometimes when newbies start playing with these templates they inadvertently make changes to the parent templates which then propagate to all the pages that use the template. For this reason we have protected these templates from editing.

However, the source is open in the sense that all you need to do is click on the "view source" tab and simply copy the text and save it to a new template name where you can make any tweaks or adjustments to suit your needs.

Cheers

Nellie:

You shouldn't need to change that template to be able to use it. You just insert it like this on the page you want it to appear on:

there's some more instructions on how to use it on the page itself.

If you really need to modify the template, the best idea is probably to copy it to another
template namespace, ie. Template:NellieNav or something and work on that one.

Brent.

Thank you, Brent. You are so kind. Thank you for the explanations. I used the template as I added the vote part for the WE Elections.

BTW I just blogged about WE on a connectivism course given by George Siemens and Stephen Dowes.

Thank you, Brent. I completed the first part: http://www.wikieducator.org/Guidelines
Now the work begins...
