I was googling Israel and Wikieducator and came across my own work
plus an initiative to add open universities available worldwide to We.
However, when I came to the OU of Israel, I found the site without a
Work in Progress (which I added) and what appears to be the same
information that is available on Wikipedia. I am sure this issue has
come up in the past so I apologize for any repetition. However, should
we be adding the exact same information that is already available
elsewhere (Wikipedia) or just use a link to direct people to the
reference?

Thank you,
Nellie

Nellie,

It will make everybody's work easier if we just make links to the
approriate sites. We may however present a breif "condensed summary"
before we direct a link so that the reader may decide whether she
wants to go ahead or not. Links to Wikipedia sites may be treated as
internal links using the W: markup.

regards,
Victor.

I totally agree with you, Victor. However, should there be an agreed
upon policy?

I don't think we need a policy for it Nellie, I can see reasons and benefits for copying large amounts of content over, as well as simply linking to it. Maybe I missed something in your original expression of what you saw as a problem in that?

I also agree to the proposal and providing the link of pages mentioned
by Nellie. The link is http://www.wikieducator.org/Handbook_of_Open_Universities.

These pages on Open Universities of the World is a collaborative model
of knowledge resource where professional from concerned institutions
join hand to compile information on the institution. This is an effort
to bring in information on a single place, unlike what WikiPedia or
other links where information is scattered and one needs to visit many
pages. Secondly, the information is template driven to bring in
uniformity. I feel that this is a good example of collaboration and
networking. I am adding the WiP on the mail page of this.

There's the GFDL & CC incompatibility problem.

There's the GFDL & CC incompatibility problem.

Bingo, there it is there. A 'good' reason not to copy.

Policy? Or just obey the rules in the GFDL?

Dear Nellie and All,
Being a part of the OU Handbook initiative, I must share my views on
this issue, from where you have got it. The idea of OU Handbook is not
to copy information from Wikipedia. In fact, any copying is bad and
not in academic interest, if nothing new is added at the end. The idea
of OU Handbook was to have reliable and current information at one
place about Open Universities. Today, there is no single source where
you can get information about OUs in the World at one place, and thus,
the idea cane to submit a project proposal to some international
agency to bring out such a handbook at a regular interval. Then we
thought why not use WikiEducator and ask colleagues to contribute
information and critical analyses based on their first hand
involvement. We have not yet been successful so far. But, the idea is
not at all to copy from Wikipedia or any other source. My colleague
Dr. Pankaj has also given some points there on the issue...

Thats it... and that is why the information provided on WikiEd needs
to be copy-right free. Usually, the information that is being compiled
on Handbook are not adressing these issues.

If I recall correctly, the fsf has plans to make them compatible. It's taking a long time though.
Here's some info.

What a brilliant idea, it must have taken a long time to think that through.

Forgive my sarcasm.

Hi Nellie,

The points from all WEs have been fruitful.

> I totally agree with you, Victor. However, should there be an agreed

I dont know if a policy really works well in this regard. It can
definatly work if there is an enforcement clause or something, or WE
had a large force to go through the community policing pages.
Wikipedia's policies on these are almost well policed but still has
mairade challenges. TO go about this therefore, i suggest a specific
[and strong] emphasis on some of these issues placed in L4C and all WE
training sessions. After L4C we must surely start discussing issues of
"refresher" cources/seminars (whichever name we can give them).

On another note, i am not sure if there exist a page/portal/category
of all "policies" we have been developing so far for WE. While we can
discuss this here, perhaps the council should collate our views on
this and incorporate into a disccussion agenda somethime. <<just
thinking laud>>

Cheers!
Victor.

I try to add categories when I see them, so check out:

http://www.wikieducator.org/Category:Policy

They're all drafts, obviously, since none have been proposed as a
resolution nor voted on by the Council.

I just added the privacy policy to the category... And it also needs a
review from the council... The council will be busy ;)
