does WE support Chinese now ?

Dear all ,

I translated the Connectivism course into Chinese and found I could not creat pages in LTC wiki page neither in Chinese , and even canot use my own user page to put the translation there , George I know you are in this group could you please look at the page , does the wiki page support Chinese too ? or my fault .every time I put some content in the wiki , it give me something I canot read .

Also I tried to put the content into Wikieducator and did creat a page called http://wikieducator.org/Connectivisim_in_Chinese ( plan to use wikieducator to offer the course to Chinese teachers this summer if it work ) coz Leigh sent me a link days ago ( Sorry Leigh I did not reponde coz I was too busy and then I forgot )

and It seems that Wikieducator can read Chinese now ,last time was also like this , but some of my friends in China told me they could not read , why in my PC I can read them in Wikieducator ?

Any Help and clarification would be greatly helpful thank you

Hi Leo,

Wow -- that's an amazing start. Congratulations.

mmmm -- I'm afraid we have a small legal problem. The Connectivism course does not meet the requirements of the free cultural works definition as the materials are licensed under a CC-BY-NC-SA license. The non-commercial restriction means that we may not include translated versions of the content on WIkiEducator :-(.

What we need to do is to request permission from the copyright holders of the Connectivism course for permission to host a translated version of these materials under a CC-BY-SA license.  I think this is a reasonable request and that they will provide us with permission to do this.

Thank you very much for the clarification , and thank you for the good words , I was thinking about this , I will delete the post for now , 

and one small question If I requent them and they say No so which means I cant use them in WE ? honestly I like WE best :)

and if they say Yes , so I can go ahead use it ,but does it affect the original CC lienses CC-BY-NC-SA ?

My ambition is if WE manage to suuport the Chinese this fall, I could use WE as the platform to combine with CCK course in Chinese , and hopefully to bring a group of teachers from China ( middle school teachers and college teachers too ) they will be the first group of people in WE and began to explore what it means to Chinese learner about using these technologies in their own teaching and learning ( welcome any thought on this )

PS a personal opinon to Connectivism course and would like to hear your comments too Wayne and others

I think Connectivism are really leading and thought provoking , however , it is not a good time for me or us to bring the teacher something like "ism "like constructivsm ,or behavourism , it is important to know some of these theory , but for me , my biggest challenge is always to trigger the teacher's interest ,and their motivation to use the technology

I don't think it is a good time or good idea to bring something like Connectivsim ( like Maxism ) coz when people hear about "ism" thing , they stop think for themselves that is why I am a little suspicious about Connectivism ( and not really crazily embrace this idea ) though I think it makes a lot of sense in my own learning , I did learn a lot from connecting with other people ( like Leigh Wayne James here )

So my practical questions is does CC-BY-SA allow me to alter the course a bit to make it more localised to the Chinese teacher here , I may totally forget about to mention the Connectivism , I myself don't feel I can be qualified to teach them the concept of connectivsim to them ( I am learning this also now ) and would like them to give their own perosnalised thought on this , all I could do maybe just offer some of reources or readings for them to read ,I am not sure if they would like to hear the term Connectivism .

PS I joined the group , and found there are a grouo of spansih learner who also translated the Course into Spanish alaready , and if some of them also in WE group ,would like to ask them this question too , how will you going to learn this course except to translate the course thank you

I'm working hard to find a solution for establishing a Chinese localisation for WE. The bottom line is that I need external funding sources for the installation and hosting.  As a Commonwealth Agency, I am unable to set up a Chinese version, unless this is funded  through externally monies :-(.

I think the Connectivism course is an excellent project and is being facilitated by some of the smartest and most respected folk in our world of networked learning :-).

The CC-BY-NC-SA license they are using, does not restrict translation of the materials. So you are free to translate the course into Chinese. However, this will need to be hosted on a site that permits the Non-commercial restriction.

WIkiEducator subscribes to the Free Cultural Works Definition, and our choice of the CC-BY-SA and CC-BY licenses means that we cannot host material which contains a Non-Commercial restriction.  We would first need permission from the original copyright holders to host a translated version of the content on WikiEducator without the NC restriction. However, as I indicated above -- you are free to work on a translation on the LTCwiki.

In terms of costs - hard and soft - how much in US or Cdn dollars will it take to set up a Chinese installation and hosting service? If the numbers are not to high, then maybe it's possible to shake the bushes to find the funds.

Hi Randy,

We would need to estimate the proportional costs of bandwidth and server costs as a ratio of our total bandwidth plus the soft costs to actually install the localisation on the server. That shouldn't be too expensive.

I'm willing to start the ball rolling by pledging CAD$100 per month from my personal funds to help support a Chinese Wikieducator. Once we know the estimated costs, we will know how much money to raise.

Who funded the Spanish, French, and Portuguese editions?

It's rather disappointing to hear that "Commonwealth" seems to mean
"English-language". There are many Commonwealth citizens whose native
languages are other than English, including millions of native
speakers of Chinese languages.

Hey James , deeply sorry for not reponsing your mail at my another mailbox ,

I canot open the wikiversity and wikieducator when I am at my school intranet ( they basically blocked everything ) however I will when I am out of the cage

However I still have the last hope for wikieducator their L4C workshop is really helping me a lot , and their commuity is kinda attaractive to me ,

but I am sure wikiversity will be good ,and I am very interested in starting working on Chinese material there too .

My personal struggle is I don't feel blended in TALO , and WE , however I still learned a lot from WE and TALO ,but maybe it is time for me to quit .
