Knowledge as a Public Good

With all the recent discussions on this list, I thought some of you may be interested in this month's SPARC Open Access Newsletter (SOAN): http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/newsletter/11-02-09.htm. While some of it is specific to open access, its generally theme is "Knowledge as a Public Good" with some good comments and analogies.

Thank you. I have been wishing for that kind of work, but haven't
known where to look. I'm moving to Indiana soon, so I will see whether
I can meet with Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom at IU. I have been
considering the economics of Free Software, Creative Commons content,
and universal Internet access in the One Laptop Per Child program. I
knew already that it would result in tens of trillions of dollars in
economic growth, and would be a force toward really free markets (as
opposed to the current Voodoo Economic theory of markets that are free
for corporations but not for people). This paper also points out
Ostrom's work on the positive impact of community-wide communications
in effective regulation of Public Goods. OLPC goes further, not only
providing the means for students to communicate, but inculcating the
habits and methods of effective collaboration in Sugar software.

Hi John,

Excellent timing :-). 

Over the last year or so, I've been thinking a lot about how the OER (teaching) and Open Access (largely research) communities can start working more effectively and productively together. With particular reference to research-led teaching universities there is considerable overlap.

WE are planning to launch Wikiresearcher.org in the near future -- this would be an open collaboration for planning, conducting and publishing research findings the wiki way. Given our open licensing policy, it would be relatively easy to have an open API to facilitate export of articles for the peer review process managed by the Open Access Journals.

The OER Foundation's partnership with Athabasca Univeristy in providing hosting services for WE is quite strategic. To the best of our knowledge, Athabasca University Press is the first University press which publishes all its work under open access licenses.

Is Wikiresearcher.org a viable project? Are there folk interested in helping to plan, shape and build an open wiki research collaboration?

As an aside, perhaps we need a separate namespace for the OER
Foundation? Since it's a level of control up from WikiEducator, it
might make more sense for its use of WE to be http://wikieducator.org/OERF:Page_name

That's a good point -- OERF should be in its own namespace -- in the
next couple of days I'll get around to moving these pages (including
their history and discussions). Thanks for that.
