Dear Friends,
I had a few recent discussions regarding the need to inform about copyrights and I was wondering if it was a good idea to expand the WikiEducator Learning4Content Tutorials and add a ‘’Copyright’ Tutorials that addresses the need for more information, options and enhances open questions of how deal with certain scenarios that are being brought forward.
Some information on WE can be found here, but I think it is time that we formally developed a tutorial that works to educate about options. What do you think?:

Hi Phil,
As you say, we do have brilliant Learning4Content tutorials 1-10 which teach how to use wiki technology, plus a few more on other important subjects such as the use of Kaltura (video editing) for instance, and how to create a learning resource and others etc that are not taught in the bottom line course but are available for self learning.
Awareness of copyright options is something that is important to our work in OER development and while there is information, there is no tutorial that teaches us the meaning of what each license actually means.
Copyrights are a large topic and it is important to know how to interpret and apply them correctly in your OER work.
Cheers,
Patricia

How would you approach that the regulations on various readers will
differ depending on which country they are in? That sounds like a
monumental task....

Absolutely, Gladys is offering an extra session this morning as pre-workshop session in her current Learning4Content workshop, starting Monday. The need is there, no doubt about it, the question for me is, how best to go about starting the development of a copyright tutorial.
Thank you, Nadia for offering to help and I am hoping that we can find many more volunteers with expertise in copyrights that are willing to extend themselves. So I went ahead and created a new page to work from :
http://www.wikieducator.org/Wikieducator_tutorial/Learning_about_Copyrights
I encourage everybody to come out to address this important issue. I am in now way an expert in this area but I am willing to help where I can.
Cheers,
Patricia
I should also mention that Nellie Deutsch and Gladys Gahona are both volunteering her time and effort in raising awareness and building capacity among the educators around this world in the copyrights education.
Come join them today, the session is starting shortly.

Patricia
Wow, Maud this is wonderful news. Thank you!

It is avery brilliant idea but the law should be universal to cater for all countries. Those with legal experience can come in handy. Otherwise members could look up the law in their countries and post for others to see.

I have posted a question on the sandbox's discussion page about the tone
of the tutorial suggesting:
"/Sharing is good/. Emphasise the benefits of sharing in education and
how to do it right (legally) and most efficiently. "

| Patricia, I am willing to help develop a workshop on copyright. I have lived the nightmare of international intellectual property litigation. OCTUBRE DE 2009.. |
| Hi! I got excited this morning about helping develop the Copyright page. I have started a very practical page of explanation, sources and recourse about copyright. The page includes information for universities and the Teach Act (US). I have included information about various countries and international law information. I have not included much for the private sector. I hope this is a good first step. I could not find the volunteer list so I have not added by name. If someone could point me directly to the sign up list I would appreciate it. I would love feedback on the page. Dear Chris,
This is amazing! You have contributed a lot of information already with the input of this. Thank you!!This is very useful information and a great start.
I am going to leave your input under the “Types of Copyrights” tab for now, it is however possible that it will find a new subpage along the process, once the community is starting discussions on intended objectives, to help us determine the optimal structure for the copyright tutorial.
I am asking all our WikiEducator friends in the world community, to give their input on this, I have therefore established a subpage called “Objectives for this tutorial “on the wiki page below. Kindly input your thoughts there. Please apply your e-signature, when making your comments.

Dear Friends,
I gave some thought to objectives for the copyright tutorial we are planning to develop. It would be great if we could find a course writer and designer who would be willing to work with us.
Here is a first draft. In no way written in stone. I am also raising two questions.
Warm wishes,
Patricia
Absolutely, Wayne, thanks for coming in. I had intended the “Tutorial Sandbox” as “Idea page” or “Planning Page”, thanks for making it clearer.
We can move the content on the Objective page I had created over to the planning page, no problem
As for structure and ideas, what’s there is only intended to jolt our memory and get our creative ideas flowing – nothing is written in stone as you say. It is definitely a little early. Thanks
Cheers,
Patricia
| Patricia, I am sorry if I over stepped the copyright page. I only wanted to add to the page. I get sick easily and need to do things when I am able. I thought having a page with references could be very helpful. I will gladly remove the information upon your request. A suggestion: maybe there is a law professor out there that can advise us on the development of the course. I have had lots of experience with lawyers who do not specialize in this area. They get things wrong regularly. I would not like to see us provide bad information |

Hi Chris,
You haven’t done anything wrong, Chris! We just have to think about Objectives, outcomes etc first before we can input content on a page as the location is likely to change. Your input has been wonderful and the community will and has I am sure appreciated it already. I was only trying to point this out to you, that’s all. You concern is a very valid, there are many facets one has to think about. I am not an expert in this area either but each in their own right, our WikiNeighbours will make contributions and we will definitely need to find someone who will look this over. This is why I raised the question who do we want to target. We should start small and build from there. It is good to have a solid foundation and build on this. I agree with Kim and Sherry who made earlier comments, to keep it simple for now

| This is a great idea. I started providing some country info on the page I developed. By the way, I will make the listing changes you suggested tomorrow. I think Internet falls under Madrid Protocol. I'll try to check tomorrow and post something. |

| What are the basic nuts and bolts (and traps and dead ends) of copyright law? |
| Most international copyright laws are under Berne Convention and the WIPO Act. Otherwise, you need to find the copyright laws of the country you are using the copyright in. Most countries have a trademark and or patent office, which usually includes all intellectual property laws. |
Who owns copyright (hint: it is usually not the author)? |
| Under most copyright laws the creator owns the rights to the copyright unless it was done for hire. |
What rights do users have? |
| Fair use rights differ from country to country unless covered under international law and that country is a signature to the agreement. |
Do international copyright conventions work in the interest of the peoples of the world, and, if not, why not? |
| International copyright laws do try to look out for the creator but not neccessaily to people who want to use the material. |
