Hi!

I got excited this morning about helping develop the Copyright page.  I have started a very practical page of  explanation, sources and recourse about copyright.  The page includes information for universities and the Teach Act (US).  I have included information about various countries and international law information.  I have not included much for the private sector.

I hope this is a good first step.

I could not find the volunteer list so I have not added by name.  If someone could point me directly to the sign up list I would appreciate it.

I would love feedback on the page.

Good idea. Perhaps in the process the following could used and enhanced:

Brief History of Copyright:

Is there a Category for learning resources on copyright?

  Greetings to all,

  Since we are working on copyright issues, hopefully this
  below message would be of interest to all:

  Sent by Alan Story

  ~~~~~~~~~~
  NEWS RELEASE FROM THE COPYSOUTH RESEARCH GROUP
  OCTOBER 2009.
  What are the basic nuts and bolts (and traps and dead ends) of copyright
  law? Who owns copyright (hint: it is usually not the author)? What rights do
  users have? Do international copyright conventions work in the interest of
  the
  peoples of the world, and, if not, why not?
  These are a few of the questions that are taken up and
  answered in “An
  alternative primer on national and international copyright law in the global
  South: eighteen questions and answers”. It has been written by Alan Story
  and was published in September 2009 by the CopySouth Research Group.
  The intended audience: librarians, musicians, downloaders
  and book readers,
  information activists, students, and others who want to know how the
  copyright system actually works in practice in your country in Latin America,
  Africa, and Asia.
  In 68 pages of straightforward and non-legalistic writing,
  this primer tries to
  unpack and explain a number of both simple and complicated concepts.You will
  NOT find it on the list of texts recommended by the World Intellectual
  Property Organisation (WIPO)…. but your comments and criticisms are
  welcome on the website below.
  The Primer can be downloaded at:
  http://copysouth.org/portal/copyright-primer
  A Spanish and Portuguese translation of the Primer will be
  completed and
  available in the next six months.
  Alan Story teaches intellectual property law at Kent Law
  School in the United
  Kingdom.
  tratados internacionales de derecho de autor funcionan en interés de las
  Estas son algunas de las preguntas que se hacen y
  responden en “Un manual
Dear  Chris,
This is amazing! You have contributed a lot of information already with the input of this. Thank you!!This is very useful information and a great start.
 I am going to leave your input  under the “Types of Copyrights” tab for now, it is however possible that it will find a new subpage along the process, once the community is starting discussions on intended objectives, to help us determine the optimal structure for the copyright tutorial.
I am asking all our WikiEducator friends in the world community, to give their input on this, I have therefore established a subpage called “Objectives for this tutorial “on the wiki page below. Kindly input your thoughts there. Please apply your e-signature, when making your comments.
Dear Friends,
I gave some thought to objectives for the copyright tutorial we are planning to develop. It would be great if we could find a course writer and designer who would be willing to work with us.
Here is a first draft. In no way written in stone. I am also raising  two questions.
Hi everyone
This is a great initiative --- clearly an important need in our community.
Given the complexity of copyright, it may be a good idea to have a dedicated
planning page, for example the one Patricia created here:
http://www.wikieducator.org/Wikieducator_tutorial/Learning_about_Copy...
Perhaps it would be better to list tentative ideas on the outcomes /
objectives on the planning page rather than creating a separate sub-page for
the objectives at this stage?
I think we need to spend a little time grappling with the design questions
being listed on the planning page, as this will help inform the structure
and intended outcomes.
Wow -- lots of energy with this project -- lets make it happen.
Cheers
Wayne
Absolutely, Wayne, thanks for coming in. I had intended the "Tutorial
Sandbox" as "Idea page" or "Planning Page", thanks for making it
clearer.
We can move the content on the Objective page I had created over to the
planning page, no problem
As for structure and ideas, what's there is only intended to jolt our
memory and get our creative ideas flowing - nothing is written in stone
as you say. It is definitely a little early. Thanks
Cheers,
Perhaps it would be better to list tentative ideas on the outcomes /
objectives on the planning page rather than creating a separate sub-page
for the objectives at this stage?
I think we need to spend a little time grappling with the design
questions being listed on the planning page, as this will help inform
the structure and intended outcomes.
Wow -- lots of energy with this project -- lets make it happen.
Dear  Chris,
This is amazing! You have contributed a lot of information already with
the input of this. Thank you!!This is very useful information and a
great start.
 I am going to leave your input  under the "Types of Copyrights" tab for
now, it is however possible that it will find a new subpage along the
process, once the community is starting discussions on intended
objectives, to help us determine the optimal structure for the copyright
tutorial.
I am asking all our WikiEducator friends in the world community, to give
their input on this, I have therefore established a subpage called
"Objectives for this tutorial "on the wiki page below. Kindly input your
thoughts there. Please apply your e-signature, when making your
Hi!
I got excited this morning about helping develop the Copyright page.  I
have started a very practical page of  explanation, sources and recourse
about copyright.  The page includes information for universities and the
Teach Act (US).  I have included information about various countries and
international law information.  I have not included much for the private
sector.
I hope this is a good first step.
I could not find the volunteer list so I have not added by name.  If
someone could point me directly to the sign up list I would appreciate
it.
I would love feedback on the page.
A suggestion:  maybe there is a law professor out there that can advise us on the development of the course.  I have had lots of experience with lawyers who do not specialize in this area.  They get things wrong regularly.  I would not like to see us provide bad information
Hi Chris --
The page you posted provides extremely valuable materials and is an
excellent draft which we would love to incorporate into the tutorials. You
did the right thing -- this is a wiki and you should be bold in adding
content :-)
If the page is in the wrong place -- not too worry, Its very easy to move
the page and incorporate this with the work of the copyright tutorial pages
--- I'm pretty sure that the team collaborating on the development of this
tutorial will figure out the best way to incorporate your generous
contribution.
Given your experience in this area -- I hope that you will be able to review
and advise as we go along.
Cheers
Wayne
Hi Chris,
You haven’t done anything wrong, Chris! We just have to think about Objectives, outcomes etc first before we can input content on a page as the location is  likely to change. Your input has been wonderful and the community will and has I am sure appreciated it already. I was only trying to point this out to you, that’s all. You concern is a very valid, there are many facets one has to think about. I am not an expert in this area either but each in their own right, our WikiNeighbours will make contributions and we will definitely need to find someone who will look this over. This is why I raised the question who do we want to target. We should start small and build from there. It is good to have a solid foundation and build on this. I agree with Kim and Sherry who made earlier comments, to keep it simple for now
Cheers,
Patricia
This is a great idea. I started providing some country info on the page I developed.  By the way, I will make the listing changes you suggested tomorrow.
I think Internet falls under Madrid Protocol.  I'll try to check tomorrow and post something.
It is avery brilliant idea but the law should be universal to cater for all countries. Those with legal experience can come in handy. Otherwise members could look up the law in their countries and post for others to see.
Good idea. Perhaps in the process the following could used and enhanced:
Brief History of Copyright:
http://wikieducator.org/Brief_History_of_Copyright
Is there a Category for learning resources on copyright?
Here is another relevant page:
This is a great idea. I started providing some country info on the page I developed.  By the way, I will make the listing changes you suggested tomorrow.
I think Internet falls under Madrid Protocol.  I'll try to check tomorrow and post something.
I am concerned about Wikieducator providing a course on any IP issue.  I am
concerned that providing a course without appropriate legal education or a disclaimer statement could put Wikieducator in legal problems.
I know that this sounds really far out but it is not.  We need to be very very careful.
Hi Chris --
The page you posted provides extremely valuable materials and is an excellent draft which we would love to incorporate into the tutorials. You did the right thing -- this is a wiki and you should be bold in adding content :-)
If the page is in the wrong place -- not too worry, Its very easy to move the page and incorporate this with the work of the copyright tutorial pages  --- I'm pretty sure that the team collaborating on the development of this tutorial will figure out the best way to incorporate your generous contribution.
Given your experience in this area -- I hope that you will be able to review and advise as we go along.
Cheers
Patricia,
I am sorry if I over stepped the copyright page.  I only wanted to add to the page.  I get sick easily and need to do things when I am able.  I thought having a page with references could be very helpful.  I will gladly remove the information upon your request.
A suggestion:  maybe there is a law professor out there that can advise us on the development of the course.  I have had lots of experience with lawyers who do not specialize in this area.  They get things wrong regularly.  I would not like to see us provide bad information
Dear Friends,
I gave some thought to objectives for the copyright tutorial we
are planning to develop. It would be great if we could find a course writer and
designer who would be willing to work with us.
Here is a first draft. In no way written in stone. I am also raising
 two questions.
Dear  Chris,
This is amazing! You have contributed a lot of information
already with the input of this. Thank you!!This is very useful information and
a great start.
 I am going to leave your input  under the “Types
of Copyrights” tab for now, it is however possible that it will find a new
subpage along the process, once the community is starting discussions on
intended objectives, to help us determine the optimal structure for the
copyright tutorial.
I am asking all our WikiEducator friends in the world
community, to give their input on this, I have therefore established a subpage
called “Objectives for this tutorial “on the wiki page below. Kindly input your
thoughts there. Please apply your e-signature, when making your comments.
  Hi!
  I got excited this morning about helping develop the Copyright page.  I
  have started a very practical page of  explanation, sources and recourse
  about copyright.  The page includes information for universities and the
  Teach Act (US).  I have included information about various countries and
  international law information.  I have not included much for the private
  sector.
  I hope this is a good first step.
  I could not find the volunteer list so I have not added by name.  If
  I would love feedback on the page.
Thank you for your input.  I do have to repeat my concern.
I think we should find a IP attorney if we are going to provide a
Hi Chris --
I agree -- While the content is under development we should post a clear
statement that the tutorials are Work in Progress using {{WIP}} on every
page.
Then subject to successful donor support / fund raising, the OER Foundation
could then commission legal opinion on the draft course materials.
Hi Chris,
Any support in finding funding support in helping the OER Foundation and
WikiEducator achieve its aims is alway's well received.
In terms of priorities, I think that getting an international IP lawyer to
review any copyright tutorials we develop would be a good starting point.
We can then think about alternatives for providing training opportunities --
possibly using the Learning4Content model with qualified IP lawyers
facilitating -- that would be amazing.
If I can be of any help in providing information regarding the OER
Foundation -- feel free to ask.
Cheers
Wayne
Most international copyright laws are under Berne Convention and the WIPO Act.  Otherwise, you need to find the copyright laws of the country you are using the copyright in.  Most countries have a trademark and or patent office, which usually includes all intellectual property laws.
Who owns copyright (hint: it is usually not the author)?
Under most copyright laws the creator owns the rights to the copyright unless it was done for hire.
What rights do users have?
Fair use rights differ from country to country unless covered under international law and that country is a signature to the agreement.
Do international copyright conventions work in the interest of the
peoples of the world, and, if not, why not?
International copyright laws do try to look out  for the creator but not neccessaily to people who want to use the material.
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE COPYSOUTH RESEARCH GROUP  OCTOBER 2009.
What are the basic nuts and bolts (and traps and dead ends) of copyright
law? Who owns copyright (hint: it is usually not the author)? What rights do
users have? Do international copyright conventions work in the interest of the
peoples of the world, and, if not, why not?
These are a few of the questions that are taken up and answered in “An
alternative primer on national and international copyright law in the global
South: eighteen questions and answers”. It has been written by Alan Story
and was published in September 2009 by the CopySouth Research Group.
The intended audience: librarians, musicians, downloaders and book readers,
information activists, students, and others who want to know how the
copyright system actually works in practice in your country in Latin America,
Africa, and Asia.
In 68 pages of straightforward and non-legalistic writing, this primer tries to
unpack and explain a number of both simple and complicated concepts.You will
NOT find it on the list of texts recommended by the World Intellectual
Property Organisation (WIPO)…. but your comments and criticisms are
welcome on the website below.
The Primer can be downloaded at:
http://copysouth.org/portal/copyright-primer
A Spanish and Portuguese translation of the Primer will be completed and
available in the next six months.
Alan Story teaches intellectual property law at Kent Law School in the United
Kingdom.
COMUNICADO DE PRENSA DEL GRUPO DE INVESTIGACIÓN COPYSOUTH -
OCTUBRE DE 2009.
¿Cuáles son las tuercas y los tornillos (y las trampas y callejones sin salida) en
la base de la ley de derecho de autor? ¿Quién posee los derechos de autor
(pista: no es generalmente el autor)? ¿Qué derechos tienen los usuarios? Los
tratados internacionales de derecho de autor funcionan en interés de las
personas del mundo, y, si no, ¿por qué no?
Estas son algunas de las preguntas que se hacen y responden en “Un manual
alternativo de leyes nacionales e internacionales de derecho de autor en el
Sur global: dieciocho preguntas y respuestas”. Fue escrito por Alan Story, y
se publicó en septiembre de 2009 por el Grupo de Investigación CopySouth.
El público objetivo: los bibliotecarios, músicos, quienes descargan de Internet,
lectores, activistas de la información, estudiantes y otras personas que
quieren saber cómo funciona el sistema de derechos de autor en la práctica en
su país en América Latina, África y Asia.
En 68 páginas de texto directo y no legalista, este manual trata de
desempaquetar y explicar una serie de conceptos tanto simples como
complicados. No lo encontrará en la lista de textos recomendados por la
Organización Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual (OMPI)… pero sus
comentarios y críticas son bienvenidos en la página web que se anuncia más
abajo.
El Manual puede descargarse en:
http://copysouth.org/portal/copyright-primer
La traducción al español y portugués del Manual estará disponible en los
próximos seis meses.
Alan Story es profesor de derecho de propiedad intelectual en la facultad de
Derecho de la Universidad de Kent, en el Reino Unido.
