G'day Michael

I see in a post from 2007 that you did not consider l10n for Wikipad
at that stage.  Has your plans changed at all?  If, theoretically,
someone was to offer to gettextify your py files, would you then
consider implementing l10n?

Just wondering...

Versions 1.9 and 2.0 would support l10n, but I have not found
translators yet.

A manual for translation is here:

http://wikidpad.python-hosting.com/wiki/HowToInternationalize

The newest POT files are here

for 1.9:
http://svn.wikidpad.python-hosting.com/branches/stable-1.9/WikidPad.pot

for 2.0:

Hi,

I downloaded the .pot file in 1.9beta15 and created WikidPad_sv.po for
translation into Swedish, according to http://wikidpad.python-hosting.com/wiki/HowToInternationalize
(it won't work if I rename it to WikidPad_sv_1.9beta15.po). I have
translated about 60% into Swedish, and now I need help with proof
reading and translation of the rest of the messages. I therefore plan
to upload the .po- and .pot-files to Launchpad and hopefully get some
help from the Swedish translators community there.

https://translations.launchpad.net

There seems to be a translations project initiated on
https://translations.launchpad.net/wikidpad and I wonder if anyone in
this google group started it.

Are there any license issues that I should have in mind when starting
a WikidPad translation project on Launchpad (eg. Launchpad urge the
translators to release the translated text under the BSD-license).

/Stefan

Thank you very much for your work.

You should also look at our new wiki at
http://trac.wikidpad2.webfactional.com/

(the old one was flooded by spam).

To write to the new one, you must first register at

I can't remember that this was ever mentioned and couldn't find any
hints about that.

WikidPad itself has a BSD-style license so there shouldn't be any problems.

Subject: Re: Localisation, l10n, translations
I have translated a good part of the file and now I need help with the
translations. Unfortunately it wasn't that easy to get into Launchpad
with this. There has to be a project to set up a translation by a
project leader and I don't know how to do that.

I have always been of the opinion that translations should be a
collaborative process with more than one user involved. For example
there are messages to translate but I don't know the Swedish
translation for them. I know the context of most the messages but I
dont't know the Swedish words. Collaborative processes is also
necessary for proof reading.

For now I have the translated file on my hard drive and don't know how
to proceed from here, but I really would like this fantastic program
to have a Swedish translation available for Swedish users. In my
opinion it would be the best if I could upload the translated text
(not the file) to the wiki so that other users could access the text
and help with the translation. The text is approximately 100 kB so i
leave it to you to decide if I should create a translation page there.
I've also noticed that there is a babel tool for Trac, http://babel.edgewall.org/
(don't know how it works, never used it).

In WikidPad.pot there are two messages missing:

1. "parentless-nodes" (message in tree)
2.  "Opened wiki word '[WikiWord]' (Message in system tray on startup)

I have now translated 99% of the messages. I've got 8 msgid:s left:

1. What is a File Launcher?
2. msgid "Natural": What is that and where can I find it in WikidPad?
3. msgid "L. and R&un": What is "L." short of and where can I find the
message in WikidPad?
4. msgid "Process auto-generated areas": What is an "auto-generated
area"?
5. msgid "Sample": Where can I find that message in WikidPad?
6. msgid "To check": Where can I find that message in WikidPad?
7. msgid "Wiki database backend:" Is that a program?

Notes:
- msgid "Choose date format" does not affect the title in the "Choose
Date Format"-dialog (lower caps in msgid?)
- there is no msgid for the "Choose colour"-dialog

and as I mentioned in my previous message:
- there is no msgid for "parentless-nodes" (message in tree)
- there is no msgid for "Opened wiki word '[WikiWord]' (message in
system tray)

phhewww... 856 messages done, 8 to go... ;)

It means the sort order. If you open the export or the print dialog, and
choose for "What to export/print" "Custom..." a wiki-wide search dialog
appears.

At the bottom of this dialog you will see "Order pages" (which is grayed
out in the normal wiki-wide search). "Natural" is one option which means
a sorting as normally expected by the user (at least as I expect the
user expects it :-) ).

>> 3. msgid "L. and R&un": What is "L." short of and where can I find the
>> message in WikidPad?

This is only in an alternative version of the wiki-wide search dialog
which is never shown and which I forgot to delete. It would mean "Load
and run saved search", but translation is not necessary.

>> 4. msgid "Process auto-generated areas": What is an "auto-generated
>> area"?

This feature was experimental and is currently not maintained. An
auto-generated area can be part of a wiki page. It has special start and
end markups and its content is not written by the user but dynamically
generated by WikidPad. E.g. I had in mind that you could write:

Here follows the table of contents:

<< toc

Between "<< toc" and ">>" WikidPad would then automatically create (and
update) a table of contents.

>> 5. msgid "Sample": Where can I find that message in WikidPad?

This also never appears. If you open the options dialog, go to "HTML
preview/export", and press the little "..." button after "Font name for
HTML preview" you will see a dialog to choose the font face name. The
bottom of this shows the name of the font written in the font itself.
Initially this field shows "Sample", but is changed before it can be seen.

>> 6. msgid "To check": Where can I find that message in WikidPad?

It is part of the spell check dialog (which can only be seen if you
installed the spell checker add-on). Below the "To check" a part of the
wiki page is shown with the questionable word marked red.

Thank you! Now we have a Swedish translation of the wikidPad UI. :) It
works in version 1.9rc03 and 1.9rc04 both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux.
It also works in 1.9rc02 except for the About-dialog (no big deal).

Since I'm using Poedit for the translation it should hopefully be
quite easy to translate future versions of wikidPad. Some future
versions request:

- Option to rename ScratchPad to local language
- msgid for "Plugin options" in the options dialog
- msgid "Choose date format" does not affect the title in the "Choose
Date Format"-dialog (lower case in msgid?)
- there is no msgid for the "Choose colour"-dialog (obviously it only
keeps the English text in Linux (using Ubuntu))
- msgid for "parentless-nodes" (message in tree)
- msgid for "Opened wiki word '[WikiWord]' (message in system tray)
-

The header of the WikidPad_sv.po:

I will put it on my todo list, but it is a bit more complicated what to
do if the user switches the language or the wiki is transferred between
users with different languages.

I can add it, but at the moment the actual plugin option pages below
this can't be translated so I couldn't see the gain of translating only
the title.

> - msgid "Choose date format" does not affect the title in the "Choose
> Date Format"-dialog (lower case in msgid?)

For some mysterious reasons I wrote it that way that some dialogs set
their title directly using a string which did not undergo the
localization processing. This will be changed in next version.

Yes, this is a standard dialog of the operating system.

Both will be fixed in the next version.

Perfectly.

Actually this is the POT for 2.0beta03 (1.9rc is at
http://svn.wikidpad.python-hosting.com/branches/stable-1.9/WikidPad.pot
), but if you tested it for 1.9rc04, it should be:

"WikidPad_sv_1.9rc04.po"

I think currently the best place would be the files section of the Yahoo
group (Google groups seem not to allow a subfolder structure and
downloading had problems in the past).

URL of the group:

    http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wikidPad

URL of the folder I recommend:

    http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wikidPad/files/translations/

Thank you very much for your work!

Thank you for your changes. I uploaded a new file on
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wikidPad/files/translations/

I translated the new messages and made some minor changes in my own
translations. I also discovered that the translation of this message
doesn't affect the dialog when running wikidPad from the commmand
line:

#: lib\pwiki\CmdLineAction.py:173

msgid ""

"Options:\n"

"\n"

"    -h, --help: Show this message box\n"

"    -w, --wiki  <wiki path>: set the wiki to open on startup\n"

"    -p, --page  <page name>: set the page to open on startup\n"

"    -x, --exit: exit immediately after performing command line actions

"    --export-type <type>: tag of the export type\n"

"    --export-dest <destination path>: path of destination directory
for export\n"

"    --export-compfn: Use compatible filenames on export\n"

"    --rebuild: rebuild the Wiki database\n"

I've made the translation but the dialog is still in English.

Thank you. A renewed "WikidPad.pot" can be downloaded

for 1.9rc06:

http://svn.wikidpad.python-hosting.com/branches/stable-1.9/WikidPad.pot

for 2.0beta05:

http://svn.wikidpad.python-hosting.com/branches/mbutscher/work/WikidP...

I have renamed your uploaded translation files in the Yahoo group so you
can upload new versions after translating the messages.
