ADRIENNE RICH (1929-2012) was one of the greatest poets of her
generation, and a major voice of 20th-century poetry. She extended her
vision constantly, experimented with her craft, set herself fresh
challenges in the exploration of a complex selfhood and relationship
to the world, and its articulation. Her poetry and her activism, as a
feminist and a lesbian, have inspired innumerable readers and
activists around the world since the publication of her first book, A
Change of World (1951) and her vocal participation in the civil rights
protests of the late 1960s. Across a career that spanned six decades,
Rich published more than 25 collections of poetry and nearly 12 books
of prose: these include Necessities of Life, The Will to Change,
Diving into the Wreck, and The Dream of a Common Language. Her
literary achievements stand at the head of a powerful tradition of
post-World War II American poetry, and resonate for Anglophone writers
and readers everywhere. In the 12 May 2012 session of PEN@Prithvi, we
will read, share and discuss poems from various phases of Adrienne
Rich’s career.
