© scartptb@gmail.com Tagore's Jeebito o Mrito, with its aphoristic conclusion, remains a sort of enigma in his bouquet of stories. Tagore had a consistent interest in representing disembodiment. Monihara verges on the supernatural, Mahamaya is a sectional cadaver, and in Streer Patro, is there a sort of assumption in to the sea?

Jeebito o Mrito confirms presence by absence. The woman's body remains, it would seem in this story, on the borderline, visible/invisible; material/immaterial; tangible/intangible.

Geetanjali Shree's adaptation of Jeevit ya Mrit is written up as a monologue, a soliloquy, tracing the inner journeys of Kadambari through dream, desire, and hallucination, after she wakens amidst the detritus of death in the cremation ground. And believes herself to be dead.
