The monumental Late Antique churches at the Red and White Monasteries in Sohag (Middle Egypt),
and their surrounding archaeological remains, are of exceptional
importance for our understanding of the development and character of
Christian monasticism. Multi-disciplinary work by a large team, in
collaboration with the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA),
and with support and hospitality from the Coptic Church, have been
underway since 2000. This talk will present an overview of the
projects, and their significance. A major part of the talk will be on
the USAID-ARCE funded wall painting conservation project at the Red
Monastery church.
