Phil kindly pointed out that some damned pagan bird holiday falls on
our normal meeting day this week.

Anyone up for meeting casually earlier in the week at McMennamins or
someplace like that?

Well... at least we got you to change that awful clam tagline. :)

If we're going to do something I think Monday or Tuesday is the best
shot. I'd be up for McMennamin's or we might venture out to some place
new. There's a nice coffee place in downtown Beaverton (Ava) that
might work. Other suggestions? Stunning silence suggests this might be
a bad idea, but there *was* interest last year...

"On the max line" is the catch. Not a lot of awesome places along the
westside max. So much for urban planning. :)

Obviously there are 3 restaurants in the Round. Not sure how practical
any of them are.

Some of you live closer by or are more familiar with the area. Any
ideas?

There's Mingos, and a Thai place in the round. Is there a 3rd
restaurant in the round? Monday or Tuesday night would work for me.
There are a couple of other places that are not too far from the Max
line Beaverton Round stop, but not right on it - probably a 5 minute
walk. There's a Mexican place called Pepitas and a Thai place called
Thai Derm (sounds like some kind of skin care product).

Mio Sushi is the third. Not sure any of them have a meetup friendly
atmo and none are cheap. :)

Let's meet on Tuesday. Now we just need a location.

Pepitas sounds more laid back from what Google tells me. I'm flexible
though.

Yeah, I think Pepitas would be a good choice. It's affordable fare.

Nix on Ava - the place is open 24 hours a day and has wifi and is
nearly always packed.

The sushi place in the Round is fairly reasonable on prices compared
to the other two.

Just out of curiosity, what's reasonable all the way at the Hillsboro
end of Max? Elmer's is a bit far to walk, I think.

Is Goose Hollow too far east for Westside Proggers?

There are oodles of eating places walking distance from the Beaverton
Transit Center - not sure which ones have WiFi, though, if that
matters.

I'd really rather not Thai, unless there's overwhelming desire for it.

It's not too bad. One block south, cross the street and cross the
parking lot.

*laugh* Not by some definitions.

There's also that place that we try to go to afterwards occasionally
(generally w. Igal) that's frequently just closing. Can't recall the
name though.

I'm not sure if I'll make it Tuesday. If I do come, I'll leave early
to get my weekly fix of dancing (which starts at 9:00 downtown).

What time will we meet? Although it's usually 7:00 at OTBC, I think
we met at 6:00 one time at McMenimins.

The three restaurants in the Beaverton round, from left to right (from
center), are Cafe Mingo (expensive, fine food, and may close too
early), Mio Sushi (affordable, good food, but closes too early), and
Typhoon (which is popular, stays open late, but I haven't been there).

If Pepitas is open, it seems worth trying, but I don't expect the food
to be good. It was OK food years ago when I was last there, but
reviews indicate the quality has declined.

For future reference, are there good places near the Beaverton transit
center?

It's been several years since I ate there. Used to be pretty OK Mexican food.

>

Well, there's a cart there with really good burritos etc., but no
place to sit...

Beyond that "near" is a relative term. Most places would be down
south of TV Hwy. There are a couple of places in that old central
beaverton area between TV Hwy and Farmington. Gloria's Secret Cafe
has great Salvadoran food, but It's hours can be pretty
sporadic...googling... oh, well, it looks like she's currently not
open in the evenings according to this: http://gloriassecretcafe.com/
...but if you do get a chance to get over there for lunch I highly
recommend it.

There's also a couple of restaurants in that shopping center next to
the Beaverton Transit center. There's Jin Wah (
http://www.google.com/local?source=uds&q=restaurant&sll=45.490645%2C-122.798095&latlng=45490645%2C-122798095%2C3817338355522629313&near=45.490645%2C-122.798095
) and there's a sushi restaurant (the kind where the sushi floats by).

Someone mentioned a place they went with Igal, I think that was Hall
St. Bar & Grill. That's about a 5 minute walk from the round.

Didn't realize there was an Elmers there. It's pretty close to the
last max stop. 2 blocks maybe. Although with the time everyone would
have to invest in getting to the end of the line, we could just meet
at McMennamin's in Beaverton. :)

I like that idea and am open to it. I'll be coming out of PDX for the
meeting anyway. I assume Markus is. If Igal blesses us with his
presence he would be. If Richard is dancing with the stars downtown
that might work better there too. Were you thinking Goose Hollow Inn
or something else?

Wow, it's been a while. That's the Hall Street Grill. It was nice and
quiet, but the meal options were quite limited, at least at the hours
we've been there, to drinks and a few appetizers.

Awww. :)

Unfortunately, this Tuesday evening is already taken, but I could make
it on Monday -- but I realize that doesn't give much time for changing
plans and may exclude others that already spoke up, so I'm not really
suggesting a change.

Hall Street is good food, but pretty expensive. It is a popular lunch
spot for business people.

Jin Wah is my favorite Chinese/Vietnamese place in Portland. I eat
there weekly.

Thai Derm is some of the best Thai food in Portland.

I haven't been to Pepitas in years, but it was always mediocre.

I think Jin Wah is a good choice. Close to the Beaverton Transit

In case I don't make it there, here are some suggested dishes:

Pepper Salted <anything> (fish, squid, tofu, etc.)
Shredded Pork in Spicy Garlic Sauce
Ginger Chicken (if you LOVE ginger)
Dry Sauteed String Bean (note that by default this is not vegetarian,
but you can ask for it to be made so)
Snow Pea Leaves in Garlic Sauce (large leaves are better)
Shaking Beef (also called Bo Luc Lac)
#44 (pork, or the same dish but with chicken, which I think is #51 or
52 but I'm not sure) - this is Vietnamese grilled meat over rice
noodles and vegetables. Pour the sauce over the whole thing and enjoy.
They do a very good job of the normal Chinese dishes, like General
Tso's, Moo Shu, etc.)

About the only things I don't like here are anything "Hong Kong
Style" (but that's just personal taste) and the Dim Sum (but only
because China Town Restaurant, at Murray and Walker, has fantastic Dim
Sum).

The name comes from the way you shake the pan when you cook it (in a
butter sauce). Served with fresh tomatoes. Yummy.

It was originally a Cambodian dish, now popular in both Vietnam and
Thailand. But it highlights what I love about Vietnamese food -- like
Chinese food with all the flavor, but with lighter sauces and fresher
ingredients. The owners of Jin Wah are from Vietnam, but they are
ethnic Chinese.

BTW, for those interested in good Beaverton lunch places (remember the
whole point of OTBC is to promote Beaverton as a good place for
businesses), my wife and I typically choose Pho Van, which is a
Vietnamese restaurant across the parking lot from the west side of

If for some crazy reason I could only eat one ethnic cuisine for the
rest of my life, it would be Vietnamese.

Pho Van (in Beaverton Town Square, on the opposite side from Trader
Joes) is very good, but there are other good Vietnamese places in the
Beaverton area. Jin Wah, although most of their dishes are Chinese,
has good Vietnamese (including #44 and #51 that I mentioned
previously). Also Saigon Grill, out on Walker Road just past 185th
(where Software Electronics used to be -- but I suppose that is
Hillsboro, not Beaverton).

Pho Van is owned by the same people who own Silk Restaurant on Glisan
in the Pearl (which was originally also named Pho Van). They also have
another Pho Van on the east side, which has the same menu as the
Beaverton one (Silk is more upscale).

You're welcome! Saigon Grill also has that dish. I think the small
Vietnamese place on Hall Blvd near Cedar Hills (by Hall Street Bar &
Grill) also has it.

I've been trying to find a restaurant that serves Nem. Nem is a
Vietnamese dish that consists of some grilled meat (sometimes you
grill the meat yourself at your table on a small charcoal stove), a
platter of fresh vegetables, and rice paper sheets (sort of like a
thin burrito wrap). You put some meat and veges in a wrapper, roll
them up, and dip them in Nuoc Mam sauce. Yummy! So far, the only
place I've found it is at Yen Ha out on Sandy Blvd, but they are only
ok and I'd like something closer. I've also heard Nem called
"rollups" or "beef with lemongrass cooked at your table" and other
names.

If anyone sees a similar dish at a Vietnamese restaurant anywhere
(especially on the west side), please let me know!

I realized after posting that something had been missing from the

still searching for the total package I guess :) I'll check out

Pho Nguyen on Beaverton-Hillsdale (just inside the Beaverton-Portland border) is real good for more of the typical Vietnamese dishes, also Pho Hung (multiple locations, but there's one in Beaverton just off Cedar
Hills Blvd on Canyon) is a solid standby.
