Dear SEPAC members,
We are looking for volunteers who will be willing to donate some of their time to join a sub-committee looking at assistive technologies to be used in the special education program.
As many of you know, there are many new and wonderful technologies available to aid in the educational goals of our children. Some of these technologies, such as the Ipad (as recently featured on the 60 minutes “Apps for Autism” program http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_8b7PgnNQQ ) are giving new opportunities to many of our children that were thought unattainable even 5 years ago. We are interested in finding the best ways to get the best technologies for our children into our special ed classrooms.
Our first task in the Assistive Technologies Subcommittee of SEPAC will be to ascertain the current needs in our community and how those needs are being met. Once we have done that, we will be able to look at which technologies best fit the needs of our community. We will also look at surrounding communities to see what strategies they have employed and what is working (and not working in their classrooms). Acting with school officials, school committee members, and members of our extended community our next goal will be to work together to find the resources to implement this technology into our classrooms as quickly as possible.
These technologies have the opportunity to dramatically change the landscape for students with learning challenges, and the sooner we start, the sooner we can put them in the hands of those who need them the most.
Please join us in this endeavor. We will be meeting on Thursday, January 26th at 9:30 am at the home of Flora Bellofatto at 10 Nipmuck Drive. You can also reach me via email or at my home or cell numbers (see below). I look forward to working with you in the near future.
Sincerely yours,
Rachel Gans-Boriskin
