West High Alliance McGuire Motion
Passed by the SCC!

Great news!

The West High Alliance (WHA) motion to petition the Board of Education
to review and overturn the involuntary and inappropriate transfer of
Dan McGuire was passed Monday evening 8/29/2011 by a strong majority
of the School Community Council (SCC). There were no negative votes,
and only ~2 non-votes.

As a reminder, the motion was as follows:

We request that the West High School Community Council (SCC) serve as
our agent to bring
the following request to the Salt Lake City School District Board of
Education (SLCSD BOE):

"That the Salt Lake City School District Board of Education (SLCSD
BOE) convene an
emergency meeting to review the facts of record and overrule the
decision regarding the
involuntary and inappropriate transfer of Dan McGuire from West High
School to Horizonte
Instruction and Training Center."

Plus, as icing on the cake, an additional motion was passed to make it
clear that the majority of the SCC also supported the requested
action, and that the SCC was not simply serving as a passive messenger
on behalf of WHA. (In advance of this vote, district employees were
excused from taking a position one way or the other.) I don't have
the exact wordings here, and it was a bit confusing, so please await
formal meeting minutes for confirmation or corrections.

It was a dramatic meeting.

Simply bringing the WHA motion to the floor required some brilliant
parliamentarianism on the part of David Galvan. If not for him, the
issue wouldn't have been an agenda item till the end of the meeting,
at which point time might have already run out. Multiple additional
procedural finesses by David and Neil Cotter were required to bring
the motion to success. Simply put, David and Neil worked as a dynamic
duo to pull this off.

And as icing on the icing, Neil and David now are the ones in charge
of drafting the petition to the Board of Education. So it is in the
best of hands.

With respect to this particular case, the positive vote does not in
any practical sense overrule the transfer itself. The vote simply
sets the stage for one mechanism for that to be able to happen.

I thank my fellow parent and student committee members for their
assistance: Gunseli Berik, Cihan Bilginsoy, Jason Chen, Lukas Gabert,
David Galvan (Co-spokesperson), and Mary Claire Huber.

Kudos and many thanks, too, to all of you:

The many, many individuals, parents, and students, who worked both up
front and out of the spotlight, doing the hard work to draft
documents; figure out appropriate procedural and legal paths; write,
collect and collate letters and other supporting information; generate
e-mail lists; make contacts with other supporters; make petitions and
collect signatures; contact the media; show up at meetings; and—of
course—form as an Alliance.

You spoke, and you were heard.

From the outset, the WHA has emphasized that the central issues were
not restricted to Mr. McGuire, to the subject of Physics, to honors/AP/
IB classes, or even to West High.

In the same way, your collective success here highlights important
general principles:

You can make your voices heard.

Your actions make a difference.

Thanks and congratulations to all!

Best regards,
Greg Clark

Since the beginning when so many points were being identified and being discussed one of the voices that seemed to consistently follow a logical path was heard from Greg. Many people have taken action and contributed to the idea that all students have the right and should be provided the best education possible. There is never enough time in the world for anyone trying to accomplish something, when I originally contacted Greg he informed he that he had a full plate and didn’t know how much he could time he could commit.  Then he brought his many skills, contributed tons of time and hard work, and was key to getting to this point.I know that he leaves tomorrow for a week or so I hope he knows how much he is appreciated and is able to get some well deserved leisure time. Thanks Mr. Clark

Thanks for the thanks, folks!

Although I physically will be out of town on business these next few days, I will remain in contact and engaged.

More importantly, the petition to contact the Board of Education formally is now in the domain of the SCC, and is being addressed by Neil and David, so the matter is in excellent hands.

Everyone, please continue to remain alert and involved.

The specific issue of Mr. McGuire’s involuntary and inappropriate transfer has been moved successfully to the next level, due in good part to your efforts. But the matter is not yet resolved, and the more general issues remain.  So further actions may be required.

Best regards,

Greg Clark

It was famously said Muhammad Ali could "float like a
butterfly...sting like bee." In point of fact, Ali said it about
himself.

Our key West High Alliance guys (Greg, Dave, and Neil) would never say
it about themselves.

So I will.

Thanks to these champions, and to all the heroes who took time out of
busy lives to attend Monday's SCC meeting.

This is great. Big thanks to Dave, Greg and Neil to be our
representatives and made this happen. Like Ania said, it is important
to mobilize ourself one more time to go to school district board of
education and win the battle.

I don't know the logic of why the SCC request is not on the Board agenda (that was mailed by Steve Asay).
