Looking for suggestions

Hi all,

I'm not sure if anyone still checks these emails, but I wanted to get your input on what to do with the money we had left over from the last Wenches with Wrenches session.  I'm still sitting on $140.  At the time we had considered a number of options ranging from a night out, T-shirts or buying tools to set up a mobile bike repair kit.   As the group seems to be on hiatus right now, we could also consider donating to a group that is still active - CBN as our original home or BikeWorks for carrying on with the Gear Up workshops.  If someone is up to organizing another set of sessions I can also hang on to it a little longer.

Let me know your thoughts and please pass this email on to anyone who was involved in the last session (2011).

I am personally in favour of a Wenches volunteers reunion with some drinks but am open to other folks' suggestions. I am also available to help out (but not take a leading role) with some sessions if there is interest.

Hi Shannon,

Since the funds were generated while we ran the sessions at CBN space, I would suggest donating it to them. I believe at the time we considered that as an option. 

Echoing someone else's comment however, I am interested in resuming Whenches activities, but I'm unable to take a lead role.

Does anyone know what Cbn is doing these days? If they are running workshops and doing that kind of thing, I think a donation to CBN would be appropriate. 

I'd love to help more with wenches but maybe next year. It's hard because its always during the busy season at work and I'm needed there.

Hi Wenches!

Glad so many people have weighed in on this issue. I'd like to make a more concrete argument for why we should put the money towards some sort of Wenches appreciation evening (if folks are even interest in such a thing!). Not really sure how we should make a decision on this, but maybe a vote by e-mail with a certain deadline to vote by would be appropriate? Anyway, here are my points:

1. We have never done any Wenches appreciation. We all put in a lot of (volunteer) work to putting these workshops on, and I think we deserve some appreciation!

2. We did pay CBN a substantial portion of the money we raised to use their space, so we have benefitted the organization financially in addition to bringing women into the space.

3. It's enough money to buy some snacks/beverages for us, but not really substantial enough to really benefit the organization.

4. I don't feel like CBN has put effort into cultivating positive community relations with us. I got confirmation yesterday that CBN is calling the women's workshops they asked me to teach "wenches with wrenches", despite it being a different program in structure and content. As I recommended to CBN, I think it would have been more thoughtful had they done some "community consultation" with the actual Wenches before doing this.

Thanks for following up Jane.  I wasn't sure where to go next as there didn't seem to be one clear winning suggestion.  I like the idea of a vote and email vote is likely the easiest way to go if people don't mind that fact that it is not anonymous.  Your comments are definitely valid and from the emails it seems a number of people would be happy with an appreciation night.  I'm certainly happy with that as well if that is what people would like to do (and it would get the money off my shelf).  It seems the three main options on this thread are:

Wenches appreciation night

CBN donation

Bike Pirates donation

How about we give it a week to next Wednesday (seems fitting as the workshops used to be on Wednesdays) for people to vote? If anyone has contact information for any other Wenches please pass this along.

It seems a shame CBN hasn't reached out as based on recent emails there seem to be a number of Wenches who would still like to help out at workshops but don't have the time/energy/whatever to organize the sessions.  Do you know if they are only looking for bike mechanics or if they still following the "everyone is welcome and we all learn from each other" model?

I know Jerry Lee (the new lead mechanic at CBN) is really interested in getting more women involved in the organization and having women's only mechanic workshops. I am out of the loop at CBN since I am not working there anymore, but I would suggest contacting Jerry at the shop: 416-504-2918. He just started this season and might not know how to contact you guys.

After the last exchange, I did get any responses then I got busy and never followed up. I need to get the Wenches money ($140) off my shelf and get it put to good use . Last call for ideas. I haven't been involved in the bike community for a while so don't have any contacts. I'm thinking donate to Bike Pirates for the Sunday program, donate to CBN or split between the two. 

Let me know by next Saturday if you have a preference or I'll donate it to Bike Pirates as I know where to find them.

Just to be a pain, I'm going to suggest Bike Sauce on the east side. ;) But I absolutely agree.  Donating to a shared bike workspace is a great use of the money.  Shannon, thank you for taking the initiative on this.

I would say pirates bc they are continuing the training for women that wenches used to do. I don't think bike sauce has a similar program to women and trans Sundays at pirates?
