If this is inappropriate I apologize in advance...

My brother lives in the US and has an iPhone. He wants to sell it to
me and I might buy it just so I can develop some iphone applications
(not crazy about the phone in general). I think I can get it at a
pretty decent price from him but I am wondering what I will need to do
in order to make it work here.

Does anybody have any experience with using iPhones from the US? Will
they need to be "broken". Does anybody know what that entails or how
much it would cost?

Please reply via private mail if you feel this is an inappropriate
forum to discuss this.

Thanks.

Hi Tim,

I'm from the US and have an iPhone. Jail-Breaking them is free -
though I haven't broken mine personally. To jailbreak the phone you
use the instructions/software/hacks developed by the 'iPhone Dev Team'
- http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ I believe the latest release is
YellowSnow.

Next you have to purchase a data plan with your carrier to use the
internet on the go. This can be a bit hit and miss though depending on
the carrier, and I have no idea how it might be in New Zealand.
