glimpseindex on OSX 10.5

I get the message
sort: string comparison failed: Illegal byte sequence
sort: Set LC_ALL='C' to work around the problem.
...

when trying to run glimpseindex on directories of multiple text files
under Mac OSX 10.5
using the latest version of glimpse from Macports or the binary from
the webglimpse web site
(glimpseindex version 4.18.2, 2006)

any suggestions?

Well, um ...

Have you tried setting LC_ALL='C' to work around the problem? You'd
do this in the same window before invoking glimpseindex.

The problem is likely to be that LC_ALL is some UTF8 variant and so
it's finding some sequence of bytes it thinks is UTF8 but it's not
valid UTF8 ...
