Hi there,

I have problem starting up Webconverger. Everytime I boot up
Webconverger, the monitor display:"Video mode not supported". I have a
fairly old CPU, with SiS vga card and Samsung SyncMater 151s (that's
why I want to use it as internet browsing only).

Please note that it happen after the booting process, so grub working
just fine.

Anybody can recommend me how to solve this? Is there any paramete that
I should add at boot? I try vga=771 & vga=788 with no success...

Thanks,
J

Have you tried http://download.webconverger.com/mini/webc-3.1.mini.iso ?

3.0 had some video drivers stripped which I (wrongly) assumed were not
needed. 3.1 is a "non-stripped" version of Webconverger.

I did notice a little issue today with USB (.img) 3.1. If the browser
doesn't come up, just hit [Enter]. I will debug when I get some time.

Hi Kai,

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately 3.1 doesn't solved the
problem. I do some googling and found out that there are some problems
with linux using SyncMaster 151s, and majority solve it be
reconfiguring X-Server (http://nixcraft.com/linux-hardware/810-video-
mode-not-supported.html).

Is there any easier way to do it? like adding something in boot
parameter? I'm an average user and and reconfiguring x-server (I
think) is beyond my capability.

Thanks in advance,
J

Hi Kai,

I found out adding more RAM (now 128 MB) solved the problem. But I
think you broke PDF support in 3.1.

I try to switch back to 3.0 (with 128 MB RAM) and still can't boot.
Are you going to bring back PDF support in 3.1 ?

Thanks a lot,
J

Oops, I did not test PDF in 3.1 support.

Sorry I did not as much time as I would have liked to prepare the
release. I should have marked it "alpha" or some such.

I'll try get a fix (3.2) uploaded by Friday.

Kind regards,

Could you please note on the wiki what happens with less than 128 megs
of memory? :)

Thanks Kai for the reply,

The machine is quite old, I think Pentium II 450 MHz. It's sitting in
my storage room gathering dust for some years :-D

I'll do some more investigation before posting to wiki page. Thanks
Kai for giving my old machine "a new life"!

Cheers,
J

Hi Kai,

I can't add note on your wiki since your wiki require older OpenID
version that mine.

Anyway, if you have 64 megs ram, Firefox might fail to load or take a
very long time to load (the screen only show static Webconverger
wallpaper, while the CD ROM drive LED blinking). Sometimes it appears
the X is restarted.

You can start it just fine with 96 megs of RAM! So, think this is the
lowest RAM requirement. But keep in mind that it might take a long
time to boot..

Anyway, I just noticed that my CPU actually a Pentium II 233 Mhz :-)

Cheers,
J

There seems to be a bug in udev which makes a release quite difficult today.

Despite pinning the latest browser from unstable:

http://git.debian.org/?p=debian-live/config-webc.git;a=blob;f=mini/config/chroot_apt/preferences

The unstable udev gets pulled into the build. I'm assured that this
udev bug will be fixed in the next few days though. :)
