Hello,
I want to use customised dropdown field  in my app,
but dont want to to duplicate the code..

my dropdown has the tree structure  in it
like in http://groups.google.com/group/web2py/browse_thread/thread/7091d1d67e...

I found I could use
form.components[0].append(myfield)
but actually, I'd like to substitute some specific dropdown field with
it

what's the best way?

as there might be some validation issues..

I think you need to create a widget. I cannot say because it really
depends on details.
