Latest Update:

Our adventure begins in slightly more than one week on Thursday, May 15th ---
Mike K. and Jackie have unfortunately had to pull out of the trip.

We have the following carpools lined up (9 people and 3 vehicles):
Mike driving with Jesse and Craig, with depart at about 1-2 PM Thursday.
Bill driving with Greg, departing at about 6PM Thursday (Bill can take 4 people)
Ken and Kristen driving, departing at about 12 noon Thursday.
Steve, did you get arrange a ride with K&K ?
Matt, I highly suggest that you carpool with Bill & Greg, if possible.

We presently have 5 motel rooms and 9 people.  We may want to consider
dropping a room early next week and unless someone else decides to join us.

If there are any other riders out there interested in joining us, there is stilll space
available.

Also, we are considering riding the Talimena Scenic drive on Saturday instead
of Friday to allow those arriving late to catch up on their sleep.  Friday would
then be a less demanding (less climbing) ride, route TBD.  However, weather
may dictate when we do ride the Talimena.  I have attached 2 files with the Talimena
Scenic drive route; outbound to Mena = 60 miles, and return to Talihena = 50 miles.
Additionally, there is an alternative day route also attached with less climbing, at 98
miles.  This route follows mapped roads, but the chances of them being fully paved is
likely very low.  We will need to inquire with the locals concerning the roads.

All,

It is now less than 3 weeks until our trip to Okla/Ark to cycle the Talimena
Scenic Drive.  I just wanted to update things and start some logistics.

Riders (8) :  Greg, Craig,  Matt,  Jesse,  Bill W., Steve S., Mike L., and Jackie.
----  There is still time and room for others to join us.
Mike K. mentioned that he would be unable to go due to work/travel
(is this still the case Mike ?).

We have 3 rooms reserved (Thursday thru Saturday nights):
Mike L. has reserved  2 rooms w/ 2 double beds; Matt has one room with a single bed.
This will fit 6 people comfortably, but we can squeeze another into each room if needed.
I haven't heard, but Jackie was considering another room and hoping another woman
    would come along ?

Carpooling:
Greg and Bill are driving up together, leaving fairly late Thursday (5PM?).
Do you have room for another rider ?
Mike and Jesse are leaving early afternoon (1-2 PM). We have room for one more
        and probably an extra bike.
Anyone else interested in driving ?  Perhaps at a time between these two ?

Mike

All,  we presently have 9 people interested in doing the Talimena.  Hope I didn't
leave anyone out.

Greg
Craig
Matt
Jesse
Bill W.
Steve S.
Mike K.
Mike L.
Jackie

We presently have 3 rooms with 5 beds (2 double rooms and 1 single room).

Jackie was hoping for another woman to come along.  If not, then she thought
that she would probably get her own room, but had considered trying to squeeze
into an existing room.

If she gets her own room, that would leave 8 people to 3 rooms, which means
people sleeping on the floor.  I myself wouldn't mind rotating one night on the floor
(I can bring a pad and sleeping bag), but probably not everyone would.

We will need at least one extra room for Jackie, and also maybe another for the guys.

Mike

Mike,

Must have been me...got it though from the original website though.
The alternative ride looks interesting...but think you're right, maybe
unpaved roads...

I also went to the Mapmyride.com webside and did a search on Talimena
and Talihena. In addition to the 60+50 Talihena "death" ride and the
94 miler you provided. There is a 36 mi one-way route from Talihena
to Octavia listed (go south then east) that might be interesting for
Friday (or Sunday) or as an alternate for others...Here's the weblink:

Just an FYI... due to many uncertainties with my schedule with both
going to Talimena as well as when I may return I will be driving
myself. Mike usually I would heed your advice it's just that
circumstances on my end are not very stable and thus I am going to go
ahead drive. While barring any unforseen catastrophes I am definately
still making the trip, there does exist a slight possibility I may
have to return earlier than the rest of you. This is not my intention
and not what I am planning, but the possibility there.

I will not see you all this weekend for I will be in San Antonio at 6
flags with the family. I will just have to wait and catch up with the
all of you at Talimena.

BTW - I saw Bill's 'reality check' and have to say I am intrigued. I
have no options for riding these roads other than the set-up I have
always had with regard to gearing which I believe is a 11-23 rear
cassette (don't know front). It should be interesting and looking
forward to the pain...um I mean fun :)

Take care on your ride this weekend and be safe.

Hi Matt,

I understand.  I've been driving myself to Colorado the last few years,
because I stay longer than everyone else.

Just drive careful and try to leave early enough that you don't get in too late.
I doubt if most of us will have cell phone service up there in the boonies.

Matt,  if you don’t know the front, and if you do not have a compact crank, you most likely have a 53-39.  A compact crank is a 50-34.  An 11-23 for the rear cassette will require a lot of power output and/or low cadence….sapping energy reserves and putting extra stress on the knees….it can be done, but it will take its toll.  I have a spare 12-27 cassette that I will bring (with tools) and could easily swap it out for you when we get there.  No matter what gearing I have, I always like to one more in reserve, to rest the legs during a long climb.  I use an 11-23 with the compact crank, for any local riding/racing, even Cold Springs, but with long, endless climbs, especially in the double digit % grades, I switch cassettes to my 12-27 (I have two of  them).

BTW, my cell phone is a tri-modal….meaning analog and digital, whichever signal is the strongest.  713-724-6724.

Steve

You know.....I've started to enter into this conversation a couple of times, but have stopped short because the last time we had a discussion around gears, one of our members (who rides a red and white bike) told me that only "real men" ride with a double and the real real men......ride with a 39 on that inner ring and do centuries with only one water bottle.

So I'm really afraid to say anything.....But what the heck. My lessons learned story:

Around the mid 1980's when I really started to get hooked on cycling, bought one of the first mountain bikes. But because it was so new, the components were yet to be evloved for true mountain riding. It had a tripple, but I believe the small ring was like a 36 or so and the rear large cog was like a 25 or so. (Unheard of just a few years later.)

This all worked fine on the bike paths in Anchorage.

But then we loaded the bike down with about 50lbs. of gear and put it on PCH-1 and rode from San Fran to La in about 6 days. Lets see I was about 33 then. Arrived in LA with two knees that were literally swolen and filled with fluid. Took about 12 Extra Strength Excedrins a day to be able to walk. Took a month to recover.

After that, I got real interested in proper gearing.

Good luck gentlemen, I'm sure you will have a great time. And while your there get Bill Weidline to tell you about the "moment in time" that he decided to switch to a tripple.

Tom,

Think everyone was agreeing with you....... While not a triple, I will
be riding my compact (50-34) with a 12-27 on the rear.... I rode this
weekend up on Long Island (surprisingly hilly with some 10-12% grades)
with a friend on his spare bike (standard cranks with 11-23
cassette). Knees were pretty sore after 85 and 45 mile days....

Hey to all,

Today on my way to Fayetteville, Arkansas, I drove the first part of
the Talimena Scene Drive to US 259. I only saw one other car on the 21
miles I was on. I think the view will be great although I could see
anything above 1900 feet of elevation due to low clouds, high
elevation was 2300 feet! You will have a moderate climb to the start
of the byway. There are facilities there. Then the first major climb
begins and it goes a long distance before cresting, maybe 3 to 4
miles. In the 21 miles there is three major climbs. A couple of them
are extremely steep and long. Inbetween the majors are a series of
smaller climbs. when I finished this drive I was debating on weather I
should use a 39 X 26 or go to the triple 28 X 27. The more I thought
about it I keep thinking Mountain Triple. I know I know I'm not a
"real man" I also believe tha it can be done on a 39 X 27 if you are
conditioned for it.

The Inn where we will be staying looked pretty bare bones. I only saw
one or two places to dine, food maybe an issue.

See you all next weekend.

Bill, how did the grades compare to those around Leaky? They are longer on the Talimena, but hopefully not as steep. Mike

Mike, I would have to say for the most part that the grades where
steeper than Leaky area. This ride will put anyone to the test on the
byway!

Trip update:

Jesse has had to drop out of the trip due to last minute family commitments.
We now have 8 riders ready to leave for the Talimena on Thursday:
Bill, Greg, Criag, Matt, Steve, Kristen, Ken and Mike.

Question ?   Should we drop one of our 5 motel rooms ?
Eight people and 5 rooms means 2 people would room separately, or we
could just have 2 people per room. I believe that both Greg and Matt have
rooms with single beds.  However, the rooms are not that expensive
($56/night) to keep them all.

Craig and I now have room for a third person in our car, leaving close to
1 PM.  Ken and Kristen, what time will you be departing from the Woodlands ?
Maybe our 2 cars could drive up together ?

Don't forget to consider your gearing, based upon Bill's comments about the
steepness of the climbs.

The trip is still open to last minute additions.

Mike

Mike and All,

I'm sitting here really wishing I could go with you guys. We kick off a Service Skills training class this morning and it goes through Friday and I'm on deck to teach a good bit of the day Friday.

You guys go have fun and send some pics back when you can. I will be working on our old website shortly, so maybe we can get a couple of good new pictures up on it.

It will be most interesting to hear the stories and the gearing conclusions.

Mike,

Maybe hold out until tomorrow to see if we get some more interest,
then I'll dump my reservation. That leaves 6 of us in 3 double bedded
rooms (your reservation) and Ken and Kristen with the remaining single
bedded room (Matt's reservation)....

On Thursday, someone just needs to leave the open double bedded room's
door unlocked with key inside and email/text me the room number for
when Bill and I roll in past midnight...

Greg,

Good idea about holding on to the extra room for another day.

I just checked the Talihina weather forecast:
Looks good - NO Rain - forecast; better on Saturday than Friday,
more sun and a bit warmer.
Maybe we should hold off on the Talimena till Saturday = better views.

Thursday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 70.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82.

I'm in the same frame of mind and a similar situation.  I teach a school in Calgary that runs until the end of day on Friday.  I've got the first flight out Saturday morning, but still won't be land until after 12.

I really wanted to do this route.  Like Tom, please bring home the stories, pictures, and reviews.  We'll live though the experience vicariously.

Regards,
Mike and Helen

Called the hotel about internet access and they do not, but it is
available at Subway and Big Al's Dinner in-case we want to share trip
updates and photos while there. Craig

I will be bringing Starbucks French Roast, espresso ground....with a coffee
maker (I would doubt if the rooms will have one, and then, it is only a
4-cupper!

All,

Just canceled my room booking. We are now at 4 rooms (3 double beds
under Mike's reservation and 1 single (king) bedded room under Matt's
reservation).

Great idea about the coffee/maker. So...I assume Big Al's serves
breakfast?

All,

Just a slight clarification to Greg's note ..
We now have 4 rooms total; 2 with double beds under my reservation,
1 single under Matt's reservation, and another single with Ken & Kristen.

I have a feeling we will be spending lot's of time at Big Al's Diner.

Weather forecast still looks good; however it will be a bit windy on Friday.
I propose that we plan to do the "Octavia out and back" ride on Friday
(about 72 miles round trip; see Greg's previous link at
It has some climbing, but not too much.  The "Indian Hwy" along which this
ride follows is also supposed to be very scenic.  It will be a good warm-up
for the Talimena, which we will do on Saturday.  I propose a 9AM start time
on Friday.

Weather.com has awesome weather for Friday, low of 48F and clear
skies. Sunrise at 6:16AM. What time is coffee served?

Mike,
Sorry for the delayed response... I can't check this email from work and am just getting caught up on home email...

The question is:  Craig and I now have room for a third person in our car, leaving close to
> > 1 PM. Ken and Kristen, what time will you be departing from the Woodlands ?

Although I (Kristen) am taking the day off, Ken is not; he's going to try to get everything done by noon Thursday and leave between noon and 1.  That departure time could be delayed due to last minute unanticpatedwork issues; hopefully it won't be!  You're welcome to leave at the same time and caravan, but it may be easier for you to leave when it's convenient for you.  So, just let us know.  Probably the best way to reach us is Ken's cell - 281-802-7543

You guys have a good ride in Talimena...wherever that is.
Be careful.

David,

Thanks. Talimena Scenic Highway links Talihina, OK and Mena,
Arkansas. Worth a Google search. Main link between the two is 60
miles with 10,000 feet of climbing...

Thanks Kristen,

We will likely leave when we are ready, but will give
Ken's cell a call to see where you are at to see if the
timing has worked out.  See you there.

The area and terrain of the Talimena Drive are really striking
when viewed in 3D, like via Google Earth.  Try it.

Hello,

The Talihina Adventure is now complete. The challenge with a ride
like this is you leave your family and work for 3 nights and when you
return in addition to unpacking, the non-cycling part of your life
presses hard to become priority one. So this will not be a complete
write up but only to let you know we all completed this epic ride and
returned home.

The beginning: On Thursday Greg LaDoe, Matt Clayton, Mike Lukk, Bill
Weidlein, Ken and Kristen Murray, and Craig Mathews departed for the
First Annual Talihina multi-day road adventure. Located in South
Eastern Oklahoma near the Arkansas border.

The area is remote, heavily wooded, lightly populated with excellent
roads and friendly locals. We were lucky with the weather, high 40’s
at the start, clear skies and high 70’s low 80’s for highs.

More to follow…
