Happy Holiday Greetings:
Well another year has zipped by & it is time for the annual New Year’s Eve Day Chappell Hill ride. The ride will start in CH ( please park around the corner of the visitor center) . Ride start time is 730am. The weather forecast is mixed. Channel 11 says some chance of rain, but accu-weather says 71-57 cloudy to sunny with a SE 7mph wind. So it doesn’t look to bad.
I have fixed the wrong turn I had on the map from last year. Thanks, to Mark Heady, we had a large group for that ride. A group of fast riders took off and never looked back. They did a hundred but they created their own route. Another group got in many extra miles when they were coming back from Independence when they took a left on 105 instead going over to 1155.
This year, I do not anticipate such a large group. It will be mostly us ultra-milers, though all are welcomed. This is a no drop ride. During the course of the ride, we will have surges. Some will be out front at an aggressive pace while others will be in the back. I, as ride leader will make sure every rider will be together at re-group points. The average pace will be 18-21, with surges in the high 20s. If you get drop, don’t worry, just keep going because we will re-group at major locations.
Make sure you are prepared for a century ride:
Ride smart- pace you self at the beginning so you can finish strong
Bring goo/snacks so you can constantly be nourished
Check your bike for worn tires & equipment malfunctions
The route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/26505776 This is not the route from a couple of weeks ago. This route will take us completely around Lake Sommerville. We will have a rest stop in Burton at mile 35, then in Sommerville, we will stop for lunch at mile 70, and a stop in Independence. We will have our NYE Mexican lunch in Sommerville.
Other stores are along the route if it is necessary.
A warning: this ride will take 6-7 hours to complete.
This ride is a celebration of the year on the bike. Come and join us for one final ride of the year. Who’s in?
Jesse

Best regards and see you on the road soon,
Steve
I recorded 5 hours and 55 min of bike time (avg of 18.3 mph) over 7 hr 30
min (we left C/H at 7:45 am). This was my first ride of comparable distance
with a Training Stress (TSS) of 330 or greater, since Leaky 2008 when I
"mistakenly" got in a group with Wink and Trav that took the long way back
from Vanderpool! So thanks everyone for the good ride, looking after each
other...there were no slackers in this group...everyone came to RIDE!
Happy New Year everyone and may your 2012 riding experience be better than
ever (it will be tough for Greg and Craig to top the PBP though)!
Steve
