Happy Holiday Greetings:

Well another year has zipped by & it is time for the annual New Year’s Eve Day Chappell Hill ride.   The ride will start in CH ( please park around the corner of the visitor center) .   Ride start time is 730am.  The weather forecast is mixed.  Channel 11 says some chance of rain, but accu-weather says 71-57 cloudy to sunny with a SE 7mph wind.  So it doesn’t look to bad.

I have fixed the wrong turn I had on the map from last year.  Thanks, to Mark Heady, we had a large group for that  ride.  A group of fast riders took off and never looked back.  They did a hundred but they created their own route.   Another group got in many extra miles when they were coming back from Independence when they took a left on 105 instead going over to 1155.

This year, I do not anticipate such a large group.  It will be mostly us ultra-milers, though all are welcomed.  This is a no drop ride.  During the course of the ride,  we will have surges.  Some will be out front at an aggressive pace while others will be in the back.   I, as ride leader will make sure every rider will be together at re-group points.   The average pace will be 18-21, with surges in the high 20s.  If you get drop, don’t worry, just keep going because we will re-group at major locations.

Make sure you are prepared for a century ride:

Ride smart- pace you self at the beginning so you can finish strong

Bring goo/snacks so you can constantly be nourished

Check your bike for worn tires & equipment malfunctions

The route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/26505776  This is not the route from a couple of weeks ago.  This route will take us completely around Lake Sommerville.  We will have a rest stop in Burton at mile 35, then in Sommerville, we will stop for lunch at mile 70, and a stop in Independence.   We will have our NYE Mexican lunch in Sommerville.

Other stores are along the route if it is necessary.

A warning:  this ride will take 6-7 hours to complete.

This ride is a celebration of the year on the bike.   Come and join us for one final ride of the year.   Who’s in?

I think I am in but there has to be someone there to help me once I
bonk when we get to Independence. That is going to be painful!

By the way: I hear there is a ride on Thursday this week? Any
details?

Hey Guys, I am sorry I will not be able to be at the ride. Greg has
agreed to help me out and be the ride leader.
My son was married on the 22, Dec. The wedding was scheduled for May,
but his girlfriend's stepfather was told that his lung cancer was not
responding to radiation and that he would not live much longer. So, they
moved the wedding to the 22nd. The Stepfather was able to escort her and
witness the wedding. On the 29th, He died. My daughter in law is
devastated.
The funeral is set for Sat at 10am.
So, you guys have a great ride. Weather looks good. Drink a cold beer and
eat some enchiladas for me.
Be Safe

Gosh, so sad and so sorry, Jesse! Our sympathy to your daughter in law, and
all of your family. He really wanted to see his daughter married and
despite his cancer, he was at peace I'm sure. We will ride in memory!

Best regards and see you on the road soon,

Great ride Greg and gang of 14 (Greg, MikeL, BillW, Kris, ChrisC, MarkB,
MarkC, JeffJ, Mario, Grant, JohnH, JJ, Craig, and myself). Good
organization Jesse and sorry you were not able to join us...I'm am sure you
would have added some more "spice!" Day started out "iffy" with the heavy
fog, making the drive over and first hour or so pretty "dicey"; the roads
were damp (contributing to two early flats). But as Greg prognosed, the
weather turned good, sun coming out as we approached Sommerville, and the
temp was 75 degrees at the ride's end! Eleven stopped for lunch in
Sommerville, and three of us (Jeff, Mario and myself) continued back to
Chappell Hill, arriving about 3:15 pm. No incidents (other than the two
flats) that we experienced...hope the group of 11 made it back without
incident. A great day for a century with good and strong riding mates!

I recorded 5 hours and 55 min of bike time (avg of 18.3 mph) over 7 hr 30
min (we left C/H at 7:45 am). This was my first ride of comparable distance
with a Training Stress (TSS) of 330 or greater, since Leaky 2008 when I
"mistakenly" got in a group with Wink and Trav that took the long way back
from Vanderpool! So thanks everyone for the good ride, looking after each
other...there were no slackers in this group...everyone came to RIDE!

Happy New Year everyone and may your 2012 riding experience be better than
ever (it will be tough for Greg and Craig to top the PBP though)!

Steve,

Good write-up. The lunch crew had a nice ride back as well. Lots of
breaks but frequent regrouping. Finishes were between 3:40 (I'm
guessing) and 4pm. Only "incident" happened to Craig (not mechanical,
safely or serious injury related) but I'll let him share the info.

Overall, a good, safe ride!

As Steve said, Jesse you were missed!!!

By the way, I rode a 16 person pedal party "bike" in The Heights as a
kick-off event to friends New Years Eve party so I got in another
1-1/2 hours of "spinning" up and down Washington Street tonight! We
got that baby up to 10 mph! Check it out:

Happy New Years everyone!

Hey guys,  Sounds like it was a great ride.  You guys were in my thoughts throughout the day.  I was thinking if you had trouble with the fog or had you made it to Burton, yet or if the store in Burton was open.
But it sounds as if all went well.   Thanks Greg for helping me out. (I have seen that pedal wagon, so you had a double workout).
I am looking forward to next year.  It will be here before in a blink of an eye. Happy New Year to all & hope everyone enjoys every mile of cycling.

That pedal-party bike is a hoot! I wonder what Corp will use it for their
MS150 team! It might fit better at RAGBRAI! Going up hills may prove to be
difficult and going down hills could be _____(you fill in the blank)! And
Greg, how many beers did y'all have to get that beast up to 10 mph!?

It took a few! Had a Cat 2 and couple other avid cyclists....no
gearing so above about 8 mph your spinning 130 cadence+!
