Mrs. Coleman,

I have a dog and 3 cats and they are terrified of storms and noise from firecrackers - especially my dog.  However, it is insensitive to want this one day and a few lingering festivity events banned because of your dogs comfort.  Had you said safety, I can understand you prohibiting your child(ren) from participating, but not others who parents allow them.  Now, imagine how this translates into the overall sharing of everything in this world.

I remember seeing a large Hispanic group of people in a parade on Rhode Island Ave during Easter and wondered how folks would accept an Islamic, Sikh or Hindu group doing the same.

While it is not identical as this neighborhood fireworks is not really part of the celebratory "event" of July 4th but mostly a fun activity, it is part of a one day rights that people should have that others may experience a little discomfort, even an evolved family member or two who is still considered an animal.

This is a miniscule amount of hours compared to the rest of the year. Please allow our kids to have some fun without ruining it with possible calls to 911/311 from you or others  who share your ideas about banning this experience.

Imagine if we all got together and banned lights aroumd Christmas because of the waste of electricity and the emmitance of carbon into the athmosphere!  Lots of kids and some of us adults would be saddened.

Just one day!  Call the police tomorrow!

After the storm two Friday nights in a row, my poor animals cannot tolerate loud noises. I wish that fireworks were banned in DC altogether.

Call 911. That is the number to use if you need a police presence. At
least in DC, it is not just for emergencies.

Happy 4th of July!

I have started to dread the 4th. On our block and many others blast off
fireworks that are illegal and dangerous. Last year it went beyond 11pm and
way past my kid's bedtime. My son is now terrified of fireworks. For the
past two years I have called 311 but they never come. Any advise? or just
let it go for one day of fun for some and me picking up another shattered
picture that falls off my wall from a blast....

Thanks,
Melissa

It's just one day. I just hope they have some supervision by adults.  Just my opinion. I don't make the rules or enforce them.  I myself don't like noise but I know the kida enjoy it.

I'm all for kids having fun with sparkly fireworks. Sorry I should have been clearer. I was talking cherry bombs and m80s (sp?) Every time the latter happens something falls as it shakes my whole house and goes on till after 11. On Hamlin they do have illegal ones that shoot up and open like the ones on the mall. I don't have a problem with those as they usually finish up around 10.

Only some types of fireworks are illegal.  Anydays, there are 360+ days in a year. Can kids have this type of fun on one? Hell, there is not much they get to enjoy!
Also, lots of times kids takes cues from their parents on being terrified of varuous things. My daughter was somewhat scared at 1.5 yrs and I just continued to comfort her but shared how beautiful it was. The next year she loved it.
Same with the last two thunderstorms and blackouts.  I told my wife not to react and act as all was normal and Sarah was fine after like 1 minute. The second thunderstorm, she just said, "look daddy, it's raining hard"! So I understand some kids are not as easily consoled but a parent has to also believe!
If people are teaching fear, they should take a psychological look at what they are doing. This also relates to other more social aspects of everyday life that "fear" gets transposed!
Don't call 911 and waste our police's time.  There are more important things for them to be available for.

Last night we went to Greenbelt for the drumming and the fireworks display.  We got back to Brookland around ten or so and what a surprise!  I live near Turkey Thicket and as we came down Shephard we were treated to a spontaneous display of fireworks put on by competing private citizens ... just folks who have fun making loud noises and watching the reactions of others and their peers. ( I know, I know, it's dangerous)  Yes, we all know that people can and do get hurt doing this ... not my point here.

Most of the individual events were rather small but then there were a good number whose complexity and volume actually rivaled the professional event we saw in Greenbelt!  There must have been six or ten individual groups all competing (very low key) for the attention of the onlookers.  It was more exciting possibly because we all know the danger involved ... in a way like watching a high speed car race on the track ... hoping for the safety of the driver's but anticipating and excitement of a crash ... there were no crashes that we say last night ... even the police drove by and ignored the events.

It was really fun and I thank my Turkey Thicket neighbors for the entertainment and the individuality of their initiative.

Good Morning all,

Thanks for the support everyone.  I think that lots of parents and older siblings love to light some personal fireworks for their kids and kids in the neighborhood.  For like 10 years, I bought a lot and lit them over in Woodridge.

Jeremy - I don't think this a fair representation of what is a result of neighborhood fireworks.  This happens all the time at various events so if this is the case, then we just shouldn't have any neighborhood festivities!  Lots of this behavior goes back to spending money on things like Street Cars instead of their Schools and Rec Centers over the years and putting actual programs.  Like I told many of you, it won't be realized until some of us right here in Brookland start getting shot or shot at.  Go back and read my post regarding PIT BULLS!

As for watching over the monuments, not everybody wants to or have the time to make that trek and fight the crowds after having a family barbecue or being in the heat all day.  No one wants anyone hurt or accidental fires.  I wonder what the report is about that here from last night.

Faye - as for your statistics,  there is so much statistics of everything that we do that is not good.  Whether it is meat with hormones, fish from Chile and China, drinking Lead Based Water in DC, Spending 2 Billion for fancy transportation because some folks don't want to ride the bus with certain others --- THERE IS STATISTICS ON THAT AS WELL.  Imagine, 2 Billion has to be promised to be spent to entice some folks to catch a BUS on Spinners!!  Imagine what that money can do for our community!  Some of us might not be shot at two years from now.  What is the longest flight a Bullet has taken - from the day one started suffocating the child and his/her brain to the day their bullet hits the target -----  "the day that the music died"  - remember that song!!  Bye Bye Miss American Pie!!!  What would 4th of July be without neighborhood fireworks????  I swear!!

We all understand the concerns and there is a risk involved.  Get out into the neighborhood and make friends with some of your neighbors and you too will probably enjoy the "neighborhood fireworks".  Might not be as grand as the one on the Monument grounds but it is personally exciting and a memory for many of us.

By the Way, I illegally parked infront of a Police Officer on T/Connecticut and without even looking at them, I watched from the medium in the middle of Connecticut Ave with a friend and our families watching the Monument fireworks and then I came back and watched it with my daughter in Turkey Thicket.  Mr. Peloquin is right, it was nice to see the silent competition amongst the various groups - everyone seemed to be having fun!!

It is not like MPD does anything regarding illegal fireworks usage, so it is not going anywhere. You can call MPD and they won't do anything. And maybe they should given what happened last night in the area:

I agree with you Melissa... Its too much. And with the heat and how dry everything is, I was worried about fires. Colorado banned fireworks this year which I think was a great idea. . Isnt it enough to watch the fireworks display over the monuments? I guess not.
