Subject: Poor Farm
Kathleen and Ron,

Bob Bailey was my great grandfather. His real name was Chrystal Bailey
(no middle name), but everybody called him Bob or Gramp.
He was married to Rose Ann MacDonald, who passed away in 1939. After
that, he married a woman who is alive today.

Originally, Henry Bailey - who married Elizabeth Carver in England and
came to America - owned the land. Henry Bailey was Chrystal "Bob"
Bailey's father.
Henry "sold" part of the land to the county, who turned it into the
County Poor Farm - I think in the 20's.

The medical center was where the parking lot is now, by the little
playground - and was the county "indigent" nursing home/hospital.
To pay for their "keep" at the home, people worked the farm. I can get
you all the info regarding the Poor Farm and the medical center that I
can find.
I'll contact the historical society tomorrow and send you what they
have.

I've been wanting to get this info online for some time now - I'm a
Web developer. This will be a good push for me to finally join the
historical society.

My lineage: Ann (Humphries) Carrier > Kate (Bailey) Humphries > Don
Bailey > Chrystal "Bob" Bailey > Henry Bailey

Ann

Oh this is wonderful, fantastic, awesome - I can't say enough. Do you need
to send snail mail, or email or what? I'm willing to also join the society
to help defray costs - let me know the particulars on how to do that. If I
can get that material will have it all on the web post haste! In the
meantime, I am posting the few photographs I have taken. Be sure to visit
the St. Clair county MIGenWeb site if you would like to see them. And
anything, everything anyone can contribute I (and so many others) will
appreciate beyond words!

Kathleen

PS. I too have had many ancestors who lived in the Wales/Goodells area, and
at least one ancestral aunt who died at the Poor Farm (after it became the
infirmary). The closest to current times were Ethel and Howard Gardner, who
lived on Kilgore Rd. Ethel is my grandmother's sister. The Gardner's are
buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery - I just located their graves during my
recent visit there. Their son, Gerald Garner, was a Port Huron firefighter,
and a pastor at one of the churches in Wales - not sure which one though.

Thanks again.

My grandmother says that that the land was passed on to Bob (Chrystal)
Bailey from Henry Bailey.  She said that Halda is the 2nd wife, that
Ann mentioned, and that she is still alive and is the one who sold the
land.

The L.G. Webb mentioned in the History of Wales Twp. was also my great
grandfather.  His name was James Lufelia George Webb but everyone
called him L.G.  There's some history floating around about him too.

My ancestry includes some of the Sparlings, Sweets, Campbells and
Baileys in the area also.  Seems to be a lot of history and thank you
Ann for the great resources you've put together.  That's where I got a
lot of my information.

Thanks for these tidbits ... I'll work on putting together a history, what
ever I can find and you folks can send me. I have a page for townships on
the St. Clair County genealogy site, but precious little info about any of
them. This will be a nice start.
