Hi all,
We're putting out a prelease of 1.8 today and are hoping you'll help make it better by installing and/or upgrading and letting us know how it goes..
Wagn 1.8 is a huge step forward. To name a few highlights:
- uses Rails 3 - the latest and greatest.
- supports Ruby 1.9 (1.8.7 still works)
- new file and image handling is more secure, flexible, and re-usable
- new settings editor is much crisper and easier to understand
- 40+ other tickets resolved: new features, bug fixes, performance enhancements, etc.
This release includes more resolved tickets and more commits than any prior Wagn release, and yet the codebase is actually smaller than ever. It's already been tested more than many prior releases, but we're raising our standards and want to get more community input before we trumpet.
Here are three ways to help make 1.8 even better:
...and, of course, let us know how it goes!
If installing or upgrading, please note:
- Please do not use the default installation instructions -- those are still for 1.7. The 1.8 installation card has (we hope) cleaner and clearer installation instructions.
- The pre-release is in the develop branch on github, not the default master branch. The 1.8 installation instructions explain how to use that branch. Be sure you've got the right code!
- We have started gathering information about platform-specific dependencies, but so far only have details for ubuntu. Please helps us make that card more useful!
- As usual, the best way to get help is to post a support ticket.
If
interested in playing with a test site,
stay tuned.
Over the next week or so, we'll be sending out some quick-and-dirty screencasts to show off some of the new 1.8 features and will provide links so that you can experiment with them. Each will go on either the wagneers list or the wagn-dev list, as appropriate, but not both, so make sure you're on the right lists.
Note that our hosted websites have not yet been upgraded to Wagn 1.8. More on the upgrade plan soon.
Major kudos to Gerry Gleason for his tireless work on this release and to John Abbe for help with testing.
- Ethan
