Heya Wagneers,

We've just released Wagn 1.2.  Here's the short summary from our blog:

Custom layouts and more powerful forms mean Wagn 1.2 will help you get even more creative and organized.

With our new custom layouts, you can arrange cards (including newly "virtual" cards like search bars, alerts, etc) on pages however you see fit.  It all works just like any wagn card: you edit, you include, you save.

Wagn 1.2 also features an upgrade to our forms system with a trimmer look and a lot more pointer interface options (dropdowns, radio buttons, checkboxes, etc).  And we've made it easier to create links that prepopulate forms.  Smarter default values makes for smoother workflow.

Wagn's a great canvas.  Paint away!

Let us know if you get to playing with the new stuff and want to do some show and tell.

- Ethan

Coming soon: Pattern cards.  We're excited about the organizing possibilities these are going to open up, and we're hoping to get your help designing the interface!

Hey Ethan,

I'm excited about the new layouts. It looks like a very simple and elegant approach you've created.

One question though... I see you can pass layout=blank as a parameter in case you've screwed up your primary layout. Is there any way to "try on" different layouts by putting layout=SomethingElse on the URL?

Not yet.  Currently the only layouts you can access that way (?layout=X) are the built-in ones that have been around for a while:
  • noside - has header but no sidebar
  • blank - no header either, just page css
  • simple - no page css even, just bare minimum for functionality
  • none  - just the content, nothing else
I see how that would be useful with test layouts, though.  We'll see if we can crank something like that out for the next point release.

You'll have a lot more options for testing and experimenting when we introduce Pattern cards, which will let you set different layouts for different parts of the site.

For some of my wagns, I'm being asked for presenting a wagn with some
cardtypes that support this sort of thing in a way that is very simple
for newbies and all that.

Please send me you best examples of this sort of thing in Wagn.

Thanks in advance,
Gerry

That wasn't very articulate. What they are looking for is forums. For
people now so up on "The Wiki Way" yet.

Safe to assume that you've seen this?

It's basically just a bunch of Topic cards, plus a bunch of +discussion cards from various parts of the site.

What are some of the key features that you might want from a Forum that this setup doesn't provide?

Thanks, yes that helps. It amazes me every time how a few cards can
create a new module in Wagn. I put the needed cards into a "hand" for
easy reference:
http://wiki.flowplace.org/wagn/Gerry+Forum_Hand

I even improved the virtual card (right+*rform) so it gives the card the
tagged card is part of rather than the tagged card itself. That way you
get a link the the discussion context rather than just the +discussion part.

Now we just need a way to fetch a hand of cards from another Wagn, and
the beginnings of WagNet are here.

This ticket is still in "testing", but you should be able to set custom layouts in this way through URLs.
