There’s an inch of new ice along the Port Henry shore but no major freeze up yet. The wind rages from one direction or the other. Today it’s out of the south.

Thanks for the report, Kevin.  Here's to tonight's calm forecast and relatively cold surface temperatures setting up some big ice out there.!

As Evan indicated there’s hope we’ll get a big freeze up if the wind dies. This section has been forming and breaking up for a couple of weeks….it wants to be frozen. My photo is looking across the port Henry beach bay (due south). It’s a narrow strip of ice along the NY shore.

This webcam is close by and faces east, a better indicator of the overall conditions: https://ny.water.usgs.gov/rt/pub/04294413.htm
….but even this often looks like more ice than is actually there due to the camera lens.

I have to get on that ice. Will a party be going out on Saturday? Ill give up Whiteface any-day for that stretch of ice.

Heading north to skate the inland sea there appeared to be continuous new ice to stevenson bay. I’d estimate 3-4 miles of new plate. I could see waves when I drove past cub beach at camp dudley.

Returning home it was almost dark when I drove past the new plate but it appears to have survived today’s light south wind. Currently the ice line is stevenson bay. It will take scouting in better light to confirm the open holes I spotted.

All that remains of the new plate is a U-shaped strip of ice that extends from the Port Henry pier to the Champlain bridge. This isn’t worth driving far for but if you’re close by it could be a fun little outing….as long as the wind isn’t blowing from the south like it is today.
