There is some shell ice but it can be avoided and there are some absolutely lovely lanes of black ice with a few bumpier sections. An ice boat course is set up and it's always fun to watch them speed by. The pressure ridges have sunk and are hardly noticeable. I didn't go past Fish Bladder Island so I can't vouch for anything further north but the rest was well worth the drive.
