Hi Carl,

No conversation about Nordic skating in Vermont would be complete
without mentioning Pam Pearson, who is also a member of our Google
group. It was Pam who, in February 1999, first introduced me to Nordic
skating on a lake near Stockholm while she was living in Sweden and
working for the US State Department. When I returned home to Vermont,
I wrote an article about skating in Sweden, which was published in the
Sunday Rutland Herald and Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus, and which you
can read here: http://nordicskaters.org/nordicskating/viking/index.html
(click on "The story begins here...")

You might say that article launched the Nordic skating phenomenon in
Vermont and New Hampshire, and from there it spread across the
continent. Among the early adopters who foolishly believed me when I
said "You're gonna love it!" were Brian Remillard, Hilary Linehan, Dan
Snipes, Kathy Jones, Peter Flanagan, Marsha Fraser, Ed Cheramie,
Martha Cochran, Peter Doyle, Phyl Newbeck, Vince Rossano, Jan de
Vries, and others too numerous to mention. Bob Dill and Evan Perkins
gravitated to the sport somewhat later, but their contributions are
equally legendary: Bob for his 'Lake Ice' website, and Evan for his
trailblazing pursuit and spot-on reporting on the best 'wild ice' in
northern New England.

I wish I could tune in your show tomorrow, but I'll be on the ice
teaching an 'Intro to Nordic Skating' clinic. Hope the show goes well.
How about a sequel?

Best,
Jamie

I would be available for a chat tomorrow morning but talking with active skaters will be more inviting. You might also want to talk to Bob Dill. His email address is on the list serve.

But I've never had an extended on-air conversation about Nordic skating. And I had a guest cancel for tomorrow's Relocalizing Vermont on Central Vermont Community Radio, so I have some time available to talk about what Nordic skating is all about, the 15th anniversary of the listserv, how people organize themselves in skating groups here in the region, etc.

Thanks, Jamie. I'm not going to try to be even-handed or exhaustive or anything on the history of Nordic skating in Vermont, but the more tidbits I have to throw into the conversation, the better it's likely to be. So that's helpful info!

You can listen for up to two weeks afterwards at wgdr.org/archive, if you wish.

Probably a sequel would be a good idea!

Cheers,
Carl
