Pete Furtado, and I went to Harvey Lake , getting on the ice at 1:00 pm. It was worth the drive. The ice having a pebbly surface it was not fast ice, but we didn’t step through any shell ice. There were places that made a hollow sound, but the shell was thick enough to support 205 lbs. I don’t know how much more weight the shell type ice would hold. Oddly, those were the darker grey sections. It took about two to four poles to get through that shell, and there was ice underneath.

I put my hand down a fishing hole, and grabbed the ice , it was a good five inches, the top part was grey ice from slush which has frozen, under that was black ice.

The wind was brisk and skating upwind was good resistance training. The down winds weren’t ripping fast due to the ice texture, taking away a lot of the glide.
We only did 12.7 miles and were both tired. The upwinds killed us.

PS In the photos, that section of smooth ice was small . There were a few of those and our legs got a break when on them. The lower picture depicts what 99 % of the ice was like.
