Beautiful smooth, and some textured ice surface out here on more reservoir . I have not been everywhere yet but there’s a good possibility that all 11 linear miles of the reservoir are in good condition to skate. I have not found any shell ice yet I will report if I do, if you don’t see a report, assume there is no shell ice. We got on the ice at old Waterford Road which is just off of exit 43 on route 93 getting on the ice involve lowering ourselves about 3 1/2 feet off of the dock and then we use the board to cross the moat . I would recommend bringing a longboard with you so that you can get on and off the ice because the mote is very big on the reservoir right now. If you do not have a board, maybe coordinate on the list with some folks to do. Given the conditions here I am assuming that both Harvey’s lake in barnet and commerford reservoir in Waterford, Vermont are also good Skating, but I haven’t been to check
yet. In any case there are many miles of smooth ice snow free skating up here .definitely worth traveling for today.

I have found some large areas in the middle where the ice is sitting over shallow pools of water, it is supporting my weight at a little over 200 pounds with pack, but definitely some spider cracking in places they should continue to thicken over the next several hours and like I said, I haven’t broken through. But if you weigh 250 or more, you might wanna consider skating the edge where I haven’t found any puddles.

Thanks, Evan!

We're going to check out Harveys lake. We'll probably be there around 12:30 or so.

Can anybody say where the best entry point for Harvey's lake is? Is it the boat ramp at the south end, or the beach at the north end?

Thanks!

We've approached from the beach at the north end.

We have been able to skate all the way to the East End and back. We found a couple small areas of thin ice, right near where the river enters the reservoir at the very East End. Other than that there are definitely some large puddles with ice that is still spider webbing under us, but we have not punch through anywhere after skating about 20 miles only found a little bit of shell ice that was dry underneath easy to see . Lots of perfect number 10 glass ice mostly number nine and eight.

Amazing, thanks Evan!

Quick cautionary note for everyone: Moore is, of course, a section of the Connecticut River, and so the level of the water beneath the ice and the strength and speed of the current can vary significantly. It looks to me like they’re planning a release starting around 4pm today. Probably everyone will be off the ice by then, but if you’re not, heads up!

You can track the levels and flow forecast here: http://www.h2oline.com/srcs/335124.html

Quick follow up on my dam release note: Evan pointed out that, due to Moore’s area and depth, even a fairly large release takes a long time to have any noticeable effect.

And, despite my intentions to go for a “short skate” today, I wound up being out on the ice well after 4pm, and noticed no changes, even down by the dam, and even along the shoreline.
