Network Configuration - Win98 Guest - Newbie

I have Linux RH7 host and Win98 guest. This is a standalone machine so
host only networking is enabled. Accessing network neighbourhood
requests a password for //localhost/IPC$. neither the root password nor
my user password are accepted (the only two set up) - Any thoughts would
be gratefully accepted

An easy way to fix this would be to change the line in your
/etc/smb.conf from:
security = user
to
security = share

You might also need to run smbadduser to add the linux users into your
samba user database (or just make all your shares public)

This is really more of a Samba issue than VMware. I'd suggest perusing the
Samba docs, especially the stuff on authentication. If you haven't set it up
with smbpasswd, it could be a problem!
