Didn't you mean /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1 (upper case S)?

Check the permissions on ttyS0 and ttyS1 in your /dev directory. They
need to be set to: chmod 666 ttyS0, for example. The common default
is to have root access only for these devices.

I assume you are not running vmware under the root account, but as a
normal user account.

Going out on a limb here, but they are normally /dev/ttys0 and
/dev/ttys1 rather than /dv/ttys0 and /dv/ttys1

His main mistake is using ttys0 and not ttyS0! UNIX is case sensitive
and ttys0 is completely different device than ttyS0!

Hi Petr,

I am aware that ttys0 and ttyS0 are different devices. Are you saying
that I should be using ttyS0 (or 1), and not ttys0? I'll give it a shot.

Thanks,

Elan

Hi Chuck, Hi Gordon,

thanks for the early responses. Eliminating obvious gotchas is a smart
first step.

1. Incorrect paths /dv/ttysX

I mistyped the path in my message to the newsgroup. I used the file
selector dialog to select the ttysX files from the /dev directory, and
accordingly configuration's pathnames are correct.

2. The settings for the ttysX are crw-rw-rw-

The serial ports are working under Linux but I continue to get the
"failed to open" error message (see problem described below).

More ideas?

TIA,

Elan
