No more than 3 weeks ago someone posted an announcement of a port of
'xmosaic' to VMS. I immediately grabbed it and put it on my machine. It
works quite nicely. However, the individual who did the port never put a
signature anywhere (that I can find) in the documentation. Consequently, I
can not find the site where it came from. (I know, I know, it pretty stupid,
but ...)

SO. If anyone knows where that port is, please re-post the FTP site address.
Thanks!

You can get xmosaic in various flovours from nic.funet.fi via anonymous ftp.

These look like the files that NCSA distribute. To my understanding, they
are all Unix flavour implementation. NCSA does not have a VMS port, but
if someone has one, please let me know as I am keen to run this
stuff on our
aging VAXs.

I got a 1.0 port from BCHM2ACLCB.PURDUE.EDU. I've also heard of one done by
Martin Gelbaum <MGel...@lbl.gov>. The Purdue port needed some minor work but
looks good. The amount of code added for VMS is truly amazingly small -- the
NCSA team did a really good job of making Xmosaic portable w.r.t. VMS, whether
they knew it or not.

Join the fun over on comp.infosystems.www if you're interested in Xmosaic.

Oops! That should be BCHM2.ACLCB.PURDUE.EDU. (Note the additional period.)
Thanks to David Woodruff at MIT for pointing out the error. Sorry about that.

The port that I currently use is of 1.0, available from BCHM2.ACLCB.PURDUE.EDU.
I'm not a heavy user. I had to make a few mods to get it to run with
Wollongong IP (so what else is new?) and the Unix-centric code to launch
external viewers also needed some tweaking.

I'm told that there is a very good port of 1.1 done by MGel...@lbl.gov, but
I've not contacted him myself so I haven't seen it.

The master sources are now at 1.2. Anybody wanna get a group together to do
the VMS port *and submit the diffs to NCSA for incorporation in the masters*?

I received a note from Alan Braverman at UIUC on July 16 that version 1.2 of
Xmosaic for VMS is currently available at ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu in
/Mosaic/xmosaic-contrib. Of course, it's not supported by NCSA (the port was
done by Bjorn Nillson at CERN (nil...@alsw.cern.ch)). My first pass at
building it under VMS 5.5-2 and MultiNet 3.2 Rev C worked okay, but I'm having
problems with "connection refused" errors, and I haven't had time to debug it.

The README claims they have it working under VMS 5.5-2 and Multinet 3.0 and
UCX 1.3A.

You'll want to read the README.VMS, and having MMS will help immensely since
there's no BUILD.COM.

Yes! This is a great idea. I had it myself a while back! I even go in
touch with Joe Hardin, the guy who generally oversees the project (not the
main programmer). My question was: "If we put together a group of people who
would be interested in porting xmosaic, would you use the modified code as a
basis for further (UNIX) developemt, so that the 'ifdef VMS's that get put in
don't get ripped out? (and leave us to start from scratch every time a new
release comes out)" The answer was "OK, as well as we can" which is probably
as good as it gets.

The next step is to get in touch with Marc Andresson (sp?) and see what can
actually get started. Needless to say, we got all distracted and did not
follow up and probably can't do much here for a week or so due to other
committments.

Possibly the best next step is to collect 'votes' from people who'd like to
help. Any ideas?
