I have been asked to be the assistant to the Bishop(s) at the DOK National Conference. I am from a smallish church which gets a visit from the Bishop once every two years so I have had little exposure to assisting a Bishop. Would someone be kind enough to offer some suggestions to me as to what I may need to do?

Here are some basic things I do.

Whether or not you know what type of service it is, it's always good to get there ahead of time. You can get a good feel for the situation, and you could probably get further instructions from the bishop as to what they want to do.

Find out if they have their hat and staff. Make sure if they do put it aside it's still accessible. If you know their habits you know when they will need those items.

When you know the type of service, what's setup, who you are dealing with, and the habits of the bishop the rest is easy. Also make sure there's water available, they like being refreshed.

I agree with Sandy.  I have worked with many Bishops and found that first you must be early.  You will find out what they are used to, they are used to working with many different people.  Ask them what they need.  Some let me take their crosier, others carried it themselves.  I always had the prayer book ready for them and took their hat and crosier when they gave it to me.  When I moved to Conn. my first bishop was Bishop Ian.  I was lucky because he is so laid back.  He whispered to me so I knew what to do.  Things are very different in Conn than NY.  My best advise is to watch them and be ready to assist as needed.  Be early so you can find out what they expect.  and most of all

If your Bishop wears a mitre, s/he will need to take it off.  It goes on the altar near the Gospel candle, and the laundress will appreciate it if there is a piece of Plexiglas right there to keep the fair linen clean!

You definitely need a few minutes with the Bishop before the service - suggest you mark your copy of the bulletin with what you're to do, and when.

Susan,
I have attached the customary for Bishop Visitations which we use at St. Richard's in Round Rock, TX. (Austin area)
This customary was developed, over several years, with the help of several experienced vergers in the Diocese of Texas and with Duke Duteil at the WNC.
We continue to update it to make it as comprehensive as possible.
Margaret, my wife, says she will see you in Indianapolis.
Hope that the customary is helpful.

Hospitality and courtesy are the keys. Arrive early and be ready to ask questions and be flexible. It's been said that a Verger serves the Bishop Ecclesiastically not Liturgically. In other words you are not his Chaplain as would be a Deacon or Priest. So ceremonially you should be prepared to assist with vesting, sitting near him, standing when he stands, accompanying him to the pulpit, holding his crozier and mitre, holding any book for him to read, but not attending him at the altar (reserved for clergy only). You should place the crozier stand on the left side of the throne ( unless you are instructed otherwise). If there is a procession you could either lead before the crucifer and torches or you could lead just in front of the clergy including the Bishop. It is also traditional to meet the Bishop in the parking lot to assist with carrying his items Into the clergy office or sacristy.
Blessings,

Great information, Andrew. I will add this to my trove of verger

I want to thank everyone for the great information. I know I will feel somewhat nervous at the time, that is my nature, but I will take a deep breath, replay your words of encouragement in me head and move forward looking like I know what I am doing.
