Press Release          VISUALS - The Squamish Valley Artists Society

Running from May 8th until June 2 at the Squamish Adventure Centre is an art display featuring the talents of local painters Sonia Richardson and Leilani Finch and glass artist Jennifer Blair.  This is part three of a series of shows organized by Squamish’s local artists society (VISUALS) in cooperation with the Squamish Sustainability Corporation and the Gift Shop at the Adventure Centre.

Leilani Beckett is featured on the first wall (left).  Her favourite subjects are water, sky, mountains, birds and animals.  Her preferred mediums are acrylics and oils on canvas, most often in vibrant tones.  She completed a three year IDEA (Illustration & Design; Elements and Applications) program at Capilano University with honours. Her creative passions include painting, illustration, graphic design, singing and song-writing.  Two stunning pieces of her work are on display for this show.  In her words, Beckett finds the positive and the beauty in the world and pours it onto canvas.

Sonia Richardson is featured on the second wall (right).  She is mostly a self-taught painter of water-colours and acrylics and has also travelled to the Gulf Islands, to France, to Spain and Mexico learning new techniques and developing her style.  Her work has been showcased locally at Wild at Art, the Squamish Public Library Foyer Gallery and the Adventure Centre.  Richardson has six unique and eye-catching paintings on display for this show.  She has found living in British Columbia provides continuous interest and inspiration for her paintings which feature florals and beautiful landscapes.

Lastly is Jennifer Blair, showing her glass works in the display case (middle).  A born creator, Blair is self-taught and admits her glass work has evolved mostly through trial and error.  Blair has found a love for chemical reactions occurring between glass and metals which create fascinating shifts in colour and texture when fired together.  The coastal mountains and surrounding nature are prevalent in her newest work which showcases trees, wildlife and of course silhouettes of Howe Sound.  Each mountain range is hand cut, each gold tree hand drawn.  Blair’s exquisite pieces  have been seen in events across Canada.  Her collection is also available in boutiques from Toronto, Niagara Falls, Vancouver to Whistler.

All are invited to visit and enjoy the talent displayed in the works of these three women. The art display at the Squamish Adventure Centre changes every four weeks and is available for sale through the Gift Shop.  Open 7 days a week, 8:30 - 4:30.
