Hi Jen,

Twice now I've navigated to http://fixmystreet.ca/about/add_city and been interested, but scared to commit because I have no idea the scope of work involved to supply the two requirements for adding Vancouver.

Perhaps you could spruce up that page to explain more of the process.  Perhaps you've probably already communicated some of it to other city organizers in email already.  For instance, what is a "shape file", and what is the format?  How would I obtain this map?  Must it come from official sources?

I guess my thinking here is that this might inspire myself and possibly others if I have a better sense of what it takes.

Cheers,
Luke

P.S. I'm *super happy* to see http://github.com/visiblegovernment/.  I hope you realize how cool that is.  I passed this notable new project onto the github developers - perhaps it'll be mentioned on their blog. :)

Hi Luke,

Good points... good points... I'm about to take off for a 2 day
conference in Ottawa, but I'll add more material on becoming a city co-
ordinator when I get back.

Thanks, too, for following the project on github. I'm not sure how
many developers the project will get, as the GIS libraries required
for geodjango are a gob-smacking install, at least on Ubuntu Hardy.
But! Once it's all in, it's a really fun framework to work with.
These projects also use geodjango:

New York Times Represent: http://blog.thescoop.org/archives/2008/12/19/represent-and-geodjango/
Every Block (as of April, 2009): http://www.everyblock.com/

As a side note, EveryBlock is going to be open-sourced in June, as a
condition of its Knight grant.
